Fatty liver disease is often caused by sugar, processed foods, and fried foods. These foods increase liver fat, inflammation, and insulin resistance over time.
In this video, you will learn: • The 3 foods that are damaging your liver every day • Why sugary drinks increase liver fat quickly • How fried and ultra-processed foods stress the liver • The best foods and drinks that support liver healing • Simple daily habits to reverse fatty liver naturally
Research shows that fatty liver can improve with diet and lifestyle changes when done consistently.
You will also learn how foods like coffee, green tea, turmeric, berries, broccoli, and beets support liver health and reduce inflammation.
This is simple, practical advice based on real clinical experience. No detox myths. No supplements.
If this helped you, share it with someone who needs to take care of their liver.
I'm Dr. Sethi, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist.
I treat fatty liver every single day, from early stages to advanced scarring to liver
failure.
And if you have fatty liver or early signs of it, there are three foods quietly damaging
your liver every single day.
And three foods that can actually help reverse fatty liver if you eat them consistently.
Stay with me till the end, because the last food I share is the one I personally use with
my patients to help slow progression to fibrosis and cirrhosis.
No detox gimmicks, no supplement hype, just real food.
So let's start with three foods silently destroying your liver.
Food number one, sugary drinks.
Let me be very clear, sugary drinks are liquid liver poison.
Sodas, packaged fruit juices, energy drinks, sweet teas.
Liquid sugar goes straight to the liver, no fiber, no breaks.
Your liver has only two options, store it as fat or become inflamed trying to process it.
And that's how fatty liver starts.
And no, diet soda is not a good solution.
Artificial sweeteners like aspartame may disrupt the gut microbiome and worsen insulin resistance,
which can increase liver fat over time.
So what to drink instead?
Water, sparkling water, black coffee, black or green tea, unsweetened.
A little bit of dairy or plant-based milk is completely okay.
Food number two, deep fried foods.
I tell my patients this line and they never forget it.
If we are deep frying, we are dying.
Deep fried foods damage liver cells, increase oxidative stress and accelerate inflammation.
And it is not just the food, it is the oil.
Reheated seed oils break down into toxic byproducts.
Your liver has to clean up.
If you must have fried foods, do so occasionally or choose an air fryer.
It is not perfect, but much better than deep frying.
Make sure to check out my content regarding air fryers,
where I discuss what to look out for while buying a proper air fryer.
Also, keep in mind the best oils for high heat cooking are avocado oil,
ghee, refined olive oil and refined coconut oil.
Food number three, ultra processed foods.
This is the silent liver killer.
Chips, candies, sugary cereals, hot dogs, instant noodles, most of them.
These spike insulin, drive inflammation and overload the liver with additives.
And let's talk about breakfast cereals.
Millions of kids start their day with them, but nutritionally, they are not breakfast.
They are cereal killers.
Better options, eggs or tofu, Greek yogurt with berries,
multi-grain or sprouted sourdough bread or whole grain roti.
Steel cut oatmeal.
Your liver doesn't heal through drastic resets.
It heals through consistent daily signals.
And there are a few foods that send the right signal every single day.
Food number one, or I should say drinks.
Liver friendly beverages.
This surprises a lot of people.
Black coffee is excellent for your liver health.
Some other good options are green tea, black tea and matcha.
All of these help reduce liver fat,
lower inflammation and slow progression to fibrosis and cirrhosis.
How to use these daily?
Aim for one to two cups per day.
Drink them plain and avoid sugar and flavored syrups.
A touch of honey is fine.
You could also add a little bit of dairy milk or plant-based milk.
If you are sensitive to caffeine, decaf is a great option as well.
Food number two, turmeric.
Turmeric contains curcumin, which is a potent anti-inflammatory compound.
It can help improve insulin sensitivity and support fatty liver reversal.
How to use it?
Half to one teaspoon daily.
Add to soups or lentils.
Marinades for veggies or meats.
Evening yogurt or kefir.
Always pair with black pepper to improve absorption.
I am a hepatologist and I treat liver diseases on a daily basis.
Most of the liver toxicity cases that you hear about from turmeric
are from the supplements and not culinary use.
But always make sure to check with your doctor first because individual responses vary.
If you are on blood thinners or other medications, that makes it even more important for you
to double check with your doctor before you start consuming turmeric in your diet.
Food number three, the three Bs.
Berries, broccoli and cabbage and beets.
Berries reduce oxidative stress.
Broccoli and cabbage activate liver detox enzymes.
And beets improve blood flow to the liver.
How to use these weekly?
Consume berries daily or most days.
Broccoli or cabbage two to three times per week.
Beets, you could roast them, steam them or shred them into salads.
And try to consume two to three times per week.
Don't overcook.
Light steaming preserves benefits.
When my patients do this consistently,
I often see real improvements in their liver enzymes and metabolic markers.
Fatty liver is reversible with diet and lifestyle.
But consistency beats intensity every time.
