Shota Imanaga takes the mound against Ryan Nelson in a pitching duel at Wrigley Field. Both teams look to capitalize on scoring opportunities while navigating a tight contest throughout the middle innings.
Shota on the mound, and the lefty going to work against the Diamondbacks.
It's a Diamondback team that is really worn out, left-handed pitching.
So here's Ketel Marte, switch hitter batting right, and Shota ready to work.
Swing and a miss, and Imanaga gets the strikeout to begin.
He has been really difficult to hit this year,
late batting just .171 against Shota Imanaga.
Cordova's retired, two away.
Corbin Carroll stands in left-handed batting.
He's definitely fighting himself. He needs to make some contact here.
And that's a fair ball that bounces up the line and off the bricks.
Suzuki's on it, and Corbin Carroll held to a single.
There you go, Candy. There's your base hit.
That might get him going right there.
Carroll at first, and here is Ildemaro Bartlett.
Ildemaro is the Major League's leading hitter.
27-game hitting streak going back to last year.
That one gets behind Miguel Amaya, and Corbin gets a free 90.
It's nice, right into scoring position now.
Now it just takes one of those patented base hits by Vargas
to get the Diamondbacks on the board.
On the ground to third, Brantford scoops it up.
In time.
Carroll's stranded at second.
It'll want no score, Cubs and Diamondbacks.
Right-hander Ryan Nelson is out there for the D-back.
Six starts and still searching for that consistency, Candy,
we've seen from Ryan over the last two years.
Michael Bush, Cubs first baseman, leads off.
Strike three, caught him looking at a fastball at 99 from Ryan Nelson.
And that's a terrific start.
Good late bite on that right to James Becker.
Out number two is Ballesteros.
He is retired, and that will bring up Alex Bregman.
And he threw it right by him, 98.
Two strikeouts and a 1-2-3 first.
Strikes out a pair of Cubs.
He takes this to the second.
Shota Imanaga coming off a 15-pitch first.
Reale is retired.
What a win.
Kind of a half-day off for Nolan Arenado, the D-H to do.
Foul chipped into the mitt of Amaya.
It's a strikeout.
He gets ahead, and then here it comes.
It just dips right at the very end.
Two outs in the second.
Jose Fernandez who gets the start at third base.
Swing and a miss.
And Imanaga looking sharp thus far as he has struck out three.
Bottom of the second.
There is no score.
And Ian Hap will start things off.
Nelson ready, and he'll win.
And that is Hap for right field.
That's back on his way.
Out of here.
And Hap goes number eight.
Turn that fence ball around, and the Cubs on the board.
It is 1-0.
That kick challenging with that cheese,
and somebody's going to take a bite out of it.
Number eight for number eight.
And the Cubs draw first blood here this afternoon.
One ball and two strikes on Pete Crow Armstrong.
Got him.
There's your higher than high.
There it is.
Third strikeout for Nelly.
Two down in the second.
D'Ansby Swanson, an RBI single yesterday.
The Cubs shortstop.
And that one chopped off the plate to third.
There will be no play.
In field single for D'Ansby Swanson.
And here comes Matt Shaw, who's playing second base today.
Meiko Horner getting another day off
after leaving yesterday's game with neck stiffness on his left side.
There it is.
The 0-2 heater blows it by him.
After two, Cubs with a 1-0 lead over the diamond back.
Two down, top of the third.
Cubs with a 1-0 lead over Arizona.
Cattell Marte.
Looked out and played it back.
Swanson ducks and throws him out.
Ibadaga deflected it with his glove.
He seems to be all right.
So that'll take us to the bottom of the third.
24 pitches in total for Nelly.
Nelly looks really good out there.
Miguel Amaya will come up to the plate.
Guys are going to kind of chip away and extend at bats
like Amaya's doing right here.
But they've got to find a way to minimize that.
And he earned that base on balls.
It's a lead-off walk.
Amaya first, and nobody out.
It's going to bring up Michael Bush.
Ripped.
Spare ball down the line.
Kicks off the side wall.
Amaya on the move.
Bush heading to second, and they're at second and third.
Stay hot, Michael Bush.
101-mile per hour.
At least two base hits.
So Nelson goes away from the hater
and throws another putter.
And Bush is all over it.
Big chance here for Bonasteros.
And the Cubs threatening.
Second and third.
Nobody out.
Fernandez at third.
That's a break for the Diamondbacks.
That ball was hit hard the other way.
Fernandez playing in the perfect place.
Catches that ball.
That ball's hit one side or the other.
That's probably two RBIs.
And here comes Alex Bregman.
He struck out swinging his first time up.
Shallow center.
Barrosa on the dead run.
Still coming in.
He's able to track it down.
What a job by Jorge Barrosa.
Nobody can advance.
That's out number two.
What a great play.
I mean, he is flying about as fast as he can.
Catches the ball on the run and delivers it in there.
And he keeps Amaya at third base.
And now McCann will huddle up the infield on the mound.
I mean, he came flying in there, Jorge Barrosa.
They're going to intentionally walk him.
And Ian Happ has just been intentionally walked.
So, Arizona will load the bases to face Seah Suzuki.
Now it's three and two.
And here comes a crowd.
All loaded up for Seah Suzuki.
Didn't get it all.
Goriel's under it and left.
Fighting the sun and the wind.
And he's got it.
And Ryan Nelson walks a high wire.
To leave the bases loaded, we head to the fourth.
Geraldo Perdomo leads off the top of inning number four.
Imanaga has been strong in this one.
Just the one hit allowed.
Perdomo lines it over the head of Swanson.
Just the second hit for the Diamondbacks.
It's a leadoff single to start the fourth.
Vargas grounded out his first time.
Batting cleanup for the first time in his career.
Vargas hits it to center.
Carl Armstrong backing up to the warning track.
And he's got it.
Vargas 0 for 2.
And there's two down in the fourth.
Lourdes Goriel, Jr.
Swing and a miss.
Stuck him out.
He pitches around the leadoff single.
And Imanaga with four punch outs here today.
Got Imanaga on the mound.
Nolan Arenado at the plate.
And that's a base hit for Arenado as he dunks it into right center.
BCA over to cut it off.
And that's the second consecutive inning the Diamondbacks have had a leadoff hit.
James McCann the catcher.
McCann down on strikes on that splitter.
Yeah, they're just not able to make the adjustment.
They're not seeing it well out of his hand.
So, two down.
And here is Jorge Barrosa.
Fly ball left field.
Swanson out to keep you in that company.
Makes the catch.
And again, Imanaga pitches around the leadoff single.
Five shutout for the left fielder.
Showed it back to work.
One away.
And a switch hitter for Delmo.
On the ground up the middle.
Swanson collects it.
Splitter's got him.
Beautiful.
He's won a couple of gold gloves.
Yes.
Just thinking the same thing.
The gold gloves were handed out today.
Dansby didn't get one.
But year in and year out, he can make a case.
Spectacular.
Beautiful play by Dansby Swanson.
Can't do it any better than that.
Eight consecutive set down by Ryan Nelson.
One away.
And it will bring up Ian Hatt.
That is ripped.
Down the right field line.
Hooking.
Foul ball into the corner.
Going to dig it out.
It's Carroll.
And Hatt into second.
And Ian is having a day.
That's how you celebrate Mike Leary's birthday.
Potentially walked.
And now stays back on the breaking pitch.
The home run came on a 97-mile-an-hour fastball.
This time it's a breaking ball right off the base of the wall.
Number two and another out in the air for Ryan Nelson.
Torrey Lovello out of the dugout.
And we get ourselves a pitching change.
Carroll Armstrong will dig in against the new right-hander, Kevin Ginkle.
Now on the mound for Arizona.
And PCA will take his base.
And that is not what Torrey Lovello was looking for.
Some men at first and second.
And here's Dansby Swanson.
He's on the move.
Ground ball right to Perdomo.
Little icky shuffle, and they get the out.
Job done by Ginkle.
He keeps it a 1-0 game through six.
Chota Imanaga works his motion.
As we begin the top of the seventh.
Tomorrow Vargas.
He had four hits yesterday.
0-for-2 so far.
Vargas on the ground.
Swanson takes it in.
And throws him out.
J.D. doesn't have a hint today.
He's just about to say he's probably going to get one more shot
to keep his hitting streak alive.
Here's Goriel.
He's 0-for-2.
And Goriel's on this one.
Drives it to left.
And it's up in the ivy.
There it is.
Goriel with a one-out double.
Well, he finally got the fastball candy, and he did not miss it.
Hernandez 0-for-2.
Tying run at second.
Two outs in the seventh.
A 3-0.
A little bit low.
And Al Fernandez is aboard.
And with two outs, runners at first and second.
With the 8-hole hitter McCann.
Dribbler to third.
Bregman.
Rolls out McCann.
And Chota gets out of it.
Bregman is retired one away.
Oh, he had half-dicks in.
One-out base is clear.
3-2 to Ian Hamm.
And that's drilled at forthright center.
Carroll didn't get it.
It touches down.
And it's going to roll.
Hamm's around second on his way to third.
And Hamm dives in with a triple.
How about that?
Ian Hamm just lining it up in the batter's box.
Triple.
That ball must have been knuckling.
Looked like it changed directions two times as it flew through the gap.
Out there in right center.
Just Carroll.
He's running it down, out, and down.
Totally agree.
Let it snake a little bit on the grass as Hamm comes up with a three-bagger.
A double, a triple, and a homer plus a walk.
Huge run.
90 feet away with one out.
Babenbach's infield in.
A little redemption here for Seau.
Out man at third.
Cuffs leading by a run and looking for four.
In the air left field.
Gurriel is there.
Hatt will tag.
Here comes the throw to the plate.
Ian is in there.
And in between Hatt and McKean.
Couldn't throw out it.
Cubs in now.
It's two nothing on the sacrifice block.
Indeed redemption for Suzuki as he drives in that huge run.
Huge insurance run for the Cubs at the bottom of the eighth, top of the ninth.
Corbin Carroll.
Went for the breaking ball.
Swanson.
He is something else.
Here's Vargas.
Hitless in three trips.
Try to extend his hit streak.
Chopped to short.
Swanson.
Two down bases clear.
Cubs trying to make it ten in a row at home.
On the ground.
Oh well.
Steinsman.
Baguio.
Ten straight wins for the Cubs at Wrigley.
Cubs win.
