Welcome to baseball's national holiday.
It's opening day, and we're here set to go
in a packed house full of excitement in the air
as the Chicago Cubs help us break the seal
on the 2025 season.
We're ready to start right now with Zach Gallin on the mound.
Yeah, what a great way to start any season
with Zach Gallin on the mound.
28 starts in the year last year, won 14 of those,
pitched to an ERA of just over 3 1⁄2.
Cubs set to go. Their season's already been underway.
They went to Japan, lost a couple of games to the Dodgers,
and this is their domestic opener.
2-2. Right there with a fastball.
Ring him up and set him down.
Gallin's got strikeout number one.
Well, what can we tell you about Justin?
330 career ERA.
This is his 100th major league appearance last year.
Rock solid stuff.
Did not go well for him in Tokyo against the Dodgers
back in the 19th.
He allowed five runs, including a couple of home runs.
He only allowed 12 home runs all last year.
Last season, Cattell Marte led the major leagues
with 18 home runs versus left-hand pitchers.
And he's got a base hit to start 2025.
It's in the gap, and Marte's on the move.
Big turn.
Little hesitation he's in standing up.
So Steele gives up the leadoff double
then gets two quick outs,
and now he'll face Josh Naylor
for his first Diamondback at bat.
And actually goes the other way.
Pro Armstrong not going to get there.
Here comes Marte and the Diamondbacks have a 1-0 lead.
Welcome to the desert, Josh Naylor.
Good start.
You always want to do something positive
that first at bat with a new ball club.
You mean like a two-out RBI?
Like a two-out RBI floater in the left-center field.
Gallon's control a little wobbly here on opening night.
He's faced eight batters run and walk, three of them.
There's your ground ball. Can they turn it?
Perdomo's going to just settle for one.
Two pretty good runners on the bases there,
and Carl Armstrong and Shaw,
they move up, but Gallon gets the out.
The runners advance to second and third.
Cubs are down by a run, two down in the inning,
and Hap trying to come through.
That is ripped right field,
and it'll touch down and get into the corner.
That's going to score two.
PCA is in. Shaw on his heels.
Hap into second. The Cubs have the lead.
It's 2-1.
He throws it.
It stays right in the middle of the zone, and whack.
He hits one down in the corner.
Cubs take the lead 2-1.
Big swing of the bat for Ian.
Here's Kyle Tucker.
Let's see if he can pick up his first RBI as a Cub.
Here's a line drive. Base hit to center.
You bet he can.
Coming to score on the play is Ian Hap.
A soft single to center by Kyle Tucker,
and the Cubs now lead 3-1.
Big swing of the bat for Kyle.
Got one here, and he drives in the Cubs' third run
here in the second inning.
Cubs answer back against Zach Gallon
with three in the second.
Gino Suarez, a lead off the home half.
Suarez drives it to left.
Guido hits Gino.
Well, he homered three times this spring,
drove in 18 runs in 21 games, and he is starting out hot.
First Diamondback homer of the year.
Bush, Swanson, Horner, four, five, and six
to open the Cup third.
Way to get him in this.
And there's the knuckle curve.
Gallon gets his third strikeout.
Wide the other way.
Well, he just got a base hit.
First knock of the season for Nikko.
Sends it out to right for Corbin Carroll.
Corbin backing up to the track, and he runs it down.
There's Ian Happ who has a big hit for the Cubs.
A two-out, two-run double in the second.
He's one for two.
Hammered right field.
This one back. It's got a chance, and it's gone.
Ian Happ will touch them all.
He's knocked in three of the four Cub runs,
and he'll circle the bases.
The Cubs on top.
It is four-two, his first of the season.
Steel at 50 pitches.
They weren't giving me any mutant strikes.
And Gabby's got his first base hit.
A lead-off single in the fourth.
Oh, boy.
This one laced to right.
Coming on, Tucker makes the catch.
Out of way, son!
Glover quickly fires it in.
That was hit hard.
He got a good jump,
and was able to grab it before it hit the turf.
Moreno is lined to left.
Happ won't get there.
Oh, they're going to stop him at third.
It's a double for Randall Gritchick.
Two-two cut on it.
Missed. Struck him out.
And a huge strikeout for Justin Steel,
and now a chance to get out of this.
Drops it to third.
Tough play for Shaw.
The rookie got to hurry, and it can't make the play.
Moreno scores, and it's four to three.
And once again, we say it so often,
and Geraldo Perdomo, with a two-out hit,
turns that lineup card over.
A rough start for Zach today.
Relieved by right-hander Ryan Nelson.
Fastball cutter, slider change, and curve.
And Bush laces one to center field, and a base hit.
Michael is aboard.
Lead-off man on base.
Here's the O.R.
Line drive, base hit, right field.
Pete Crow Armstrong on base for the second time.
The Cubs have a two-out rally going here
in the top half of the fifth inning.
Bush hits second, PCA now at first after the single.
His first hit of the season, and it'll bring up Matt Shaw.
On the ground, Perdomo goes to second.
Safe at second, and everybody's safe.
Just a bad choice right there.
You know, we talk about how speed impacts the game
in so many different ways,
just beating the rap on a forced play.
So now a golden opportunity for Miguel Amaya.
Two outs, and the base is loaded.
Line drive out of the center field.
Sinking, and it's off the glove of McCarthy.
In to score is Pete Crow Armstrong.
Here comes Shaw, and the bases are unloaded.
Amaya knocks in all three, and the Cubs have a 7-3 lead.
Diamondbacks have certainly made some mistakes tonight.
McCarthy not able to haul this one in.
That ball might have been knuckling on him.
Really well struck by Amaya.
That's a ball that probably should have been caught.
7-3, Chicago has the lead,
and Corbin Carroll set to start us off in the home half.
Justin Steele out there at 68 pitches through four.
Now that one caught him.
That's a sinker that Steele tried to get in there.
Corbin's aboard.
Now left on left, you got Naylor at the plate with one out.
We'd love to see Steele get in on him
and get a little ground ball.
Naylor not a fast runner.
That's the first Busch as it spins and throws.
Swanson picks it up and turned to first, and a double play.
Fancy, fancy, fancy.
How about that?
There's your gold Glover at shortstop, Dansby Swanson.
Spectacular work by Dansby Swanson.
The throw's off the mark.
He has to go to a knee to catch it,
and then has the ability to flip that ball
back over to first base.
The 1-1.
And now Seyer is one for four.
Base hit the other way for Suzuki.
Nico Horner one for three with a single.
Cubs lead 7-3.
Suzuki at second.
Ground ball, fair ball, base hit down the right field line.
That'll score a run.
Nico Horner, an RBI single, and the Cubs add on.
It is 8-3 here in the sixth.
Welcome back, Nico.
So three gifts loads the bags.
And Jake McCarthy ready to step in.
McCarthy, fly to right.
Tucker backpedaling, still backpedaling.
He's got it on the warning track.
Moreno will tag Suarez into third RBI
for Jake, and it's 8-4.
Whatever that information is.
This is scooped out to left.
He and half the gold Glover runs it down.
One more run coming home as Suarez tags,
and it's 8-5.
So back-to-back sacrifice flies,
making a three-run game,
and Marte is the hitter with double-barrel action
in Craig Council's bullpen.
Muriel gets it high in the air.
Left field for a half to the wall, and he's got it.
Missed it by that much.
Here's Miguel Amaya.
Cubs trying to break it open.
Line drive, left field.
That'll touchdown and get into the corner.
In to score is Nico Horner.
Here comes Shaw around third.
He's in to score.
It's a five-RBI night for Miguel Amaya,
and the Cubs enjoying a 10-5 lead.
Horner takes off for third.
There's Horner. Gathers it in.
Over to first.
Ball game. Cubs win.
Presley finishes it off, and here in Arizona,
the Cubs down the Diamondbacks 10-6.
