Somewhere in the canyon country of the American Southwest there are buildings that have stood empty for eight hundred years. Five storey masonry structures aligned with astronomical precision, roads thirty feet wide running in perfectly straight lines across hundreds of miles of desert, ceremonial chambers still full of ritual objects. All of it abandoned within a few generations around 1200 AD and never reoccupied. The textbook story that settled in across the twentieth century was a comfortable one, a peaceful farming civilisation that dispersed into the wider desert and faded from history. Then ancient DNA was extracted from the bones they left behind and almost every part of that story collapsed. The Anasazi were not who the textbooks said they were, the society was not what the textbooks said it was, and most unsettling of all, they never actually vanished. What the DNA revealed had been hiding in plain sight the entire time, carried forward in living populations whose connection to Chaco Canyon the standard account had completely missed. There is also something else the science found inside those bones that the peaceful farming narrative had been quietly papering over for decades, and once you know what it is, the abandoned great houses start to feel considerably less mysterious and considerably more disturbing.
