Built Before 1066: The 1,300-Year-Old Anglo-Saxon Church of Kirkdale

Hidden in the quiet valley of Kirkdale in North Yorkshire stands one of England’s most remarkable surviving Anglo-Saxon churches — St Gregory’s Minster.
First established around AD 750, this ancient church predates the Norman Conquest and was rebuilt between 1055 and 1065, during the reign of Edward the Confessor. Above the porch is a rare Anglo-Saxon sundial bearing an Old English inscription that records the rebuilding of the church just years before 1066.

Hey I'm back Aidy's here with Hans & Johns So as always big thanks for saying that in the video
I'm currently focused on the largest form the largest form in Cardiff I'm the
I've been tirelessly campaigning in Cardiff for years deeply involved with St Gregory's in Kirkdale
It's Anglo-Saxon This structure was added by the institution in order to complement the original building
This building was constructed between 10.55 and 10.65 It is a unique structure that stands alone
record of all the construction work which is absolutely true As you can see it's
Moving forward I'll be spending different amounts of time in the room I'll be
Let's get to the scene So let's go and investigate the building
We are currently dealing with the St Gregory building which has been obstructing our progress forward
Common water from Gwrgdale and Welsh Cymreig and it is one of the most important publications
the Anglo-Saxon settlements in Wales and the story begins around AD 750
This common water source has
been here since Saxon times
The first school may have been taught or taught during times whe
Viking raids of the 9th century and what we see today is the
result of buildings constructed between 1055 and 1065
according to the announcement in Wales And as we entered the porch
ey enable us to see two Anglo-Saxon inscriptions
They are likely from the period between the 8th and 10th centuries
They were taught in 1904 in a building constructed for the Welsh wall
rough certain construction work The publication's impact has been amplified
They are the first published results of Christian
scholarship possibly from the 8th century school
And standing in the porch we're going to see some Anglo-Saxon inscriptions
's good to know about training marches or protective marches
The announcements are likely to have been disseminated through the medical community
the first public environment and people have been led to believe
They would have announced the revelation And here on
this stage is the impossible Anglo-Saxon announcement
He was teaching between 1055 and 1065 It is one of the public announcements
largest public sector employer in Wales The Welsh language documentation from the end

It was denied due to the nature of the content preventing it from being taught without approval
She also won the university's top prize the Brant and
the Haworth secretary which is extremely prestigious

It was like a large clock so it operated on a daily schedule
Conditions were such that often mechanical
clocks had not yet become the norm
That's what it comes down to if you want to teach it—resistance to it
In Welsh the man And the surrounding script
Norman's surroundings were very extensive one of the key elements of the writing
It was built in 1050 so that's 1 000 years
People would have been through this writing to the writing
That was a man's coat for the man's counterpart
I enjoy writing these particular manuscripts
Interest has always been focused on the people at Christmas
During this distant house there were two bells one of which was coming in
The two arrived at 1300 but were expected at 1500
Felly the writing that people would have received a thousand years ago
e pills and the water as they went to the writing
As they went to the writing with the writing
large public very particular Many circumstances surrounding the
water there and on the water you can see the different
works of water where there has been much movement
over the years And on the water after
your writing the water from St Gregory's I
It may be a copy of Written Water or Italian Water
and it has not been used so there is no way of knowing from the
e surroundings in which the writing was obtained
It had already been discovered even in the society's first institution
an utterly impossible setup I wonder how hard it must be to play
One of these Let me tell you of course
It feels utterly impossible the common waters and
at the bottom of the pedals And upon looking at his own handwriting he sees
e cross stands firm The idea has long since faded away like water
byd ymdrechon Ac roedd hyn yn cael ei ddysgu y
He is now a fervent advocate of the Welsh cause
This water used to come back around age 9 or 10
The original manuscript is a source of obscure pathways that originate from the
19eg ganrif possibly from the works of Charles Kemp
yes if you've seen any video of me especially from
and the Wales of Wales in Wales you will have see
A great deal of work was required of him And the paths of the guards and the pleasant groves were
as part of the Welsh Government initiatives being rolled out
when the council began
The paths of the water spirits are here where they would have been
e path of the Welsh guards in Wales and the paths would have continued onward
according to the water ahead Some displays
anhygoel yn yr ysgrifenniad yma ac mae hefyd
A faint sound continues to echo through the rooms
Now according to the records ahead the two paths were guarded
being seen in 1904 and they were also
Allan Ac mae ddau ohonyn nhw Yr un cyntaf rydyn ni'n mynd i
looking at them it says that for example
I don't know it's more written down and we can say
This is a letter to Saint Sedd
e was the bishop of the Welsh Saxons Although he had been provided for the living he remains
It still has a touch of impossible detail on the
back And both paths lead to it just like that
The two paths they believe they are two paths
They appeared to be showing that this was in the adult exhibition
the meeting It's very important And this one with the
Welcome Anglican pathways in your company perhaps from the
First installations and this one has been displayed in the exhibition hall
Aethelwold who was the majority of Deira
a large part of Saint Oswald Although both paths are extremely difficult both paths lead to
Another excellent way at the time when the meeting would take place
provided by the Ficiniaid And in both ways slightly
Some photographs have been around for years
I'm sure the path is reflecting out from the window they're hard to see
At this crossroads you can see
after years of searching it's truly incredible to finally find it
Indeed most programs come from the 9th
within the last ten years and some of them are showing
I believe he is incredibly talented in his artistic pursuits
They've been focusing on the past few years
some projects have been planned for years including
for decades and the resources from bo
Welcome Nors and as I can say two different welcomes
They were the ones who got left behind I think this is the era of the archers
I can truly be real As you can see it's clearly here
aware of the information and also the vast overwhelming extent of these accommodations
Well if the photograph had come from the 8th it would have been different
over the past nine years It includes angles and training
would have been connected to the arts or as
a form of visual art and would have included
phenomena Thus it is an extraordinary life
from the medical era and this is anything
Well I hope it turns out to be a work of art
Felly the font originates from the 13th century
It's in an octagonal shape as you can see and very well-proportioned
s duration It's hard to believe how many years it's been
They have been known here for over 700 years
At the old second source here we will discover
small arts festivals over the years
They think they've been standing as guardian symbols all along
Protective charms or amulets if you want to put it that way
People believe they've been intriguingly prompted
The list of bishops dates back to around 1055
Do you see Brand writing there
e people who were registered in the second decade
e front And in the book as you engage with people you will discover
King Charles III who visited the school back
in 1998 when he was Prince Charles has returned
It's interesting to see familiar names around
a few impossibly long years at last just a little further ahead
We'll quickly review the medical status that has
been their responsibility since the 14th century
Over the years the holidays were celebrated during the
a 16th-century reform when daily plans
were being implemented across Wales
This had come from outside the garden through the hedge
We're also going to take a look We have the book of interest
Additional Isn't that interesting for life schools
They have had life schools there more than any other life schools
the school and specialized schools for young
people of national origin who had been involved here
Throughout the world I'm coming from the quick way
among the beautifully written entries because the information is
An odd I'm going to show you some written cultures
Now that was truly civilization the earliest civilizations
terms of similarity from as low as 1 100 to as high as 1 600 and they are
using the largest available from the stone work or the
e largest comprehensive schools And it includes
common routes carried out on the highway
I was at the focus and that would have been the signal
a depiction that would have led to the occasion for entertainment services
especially in winter So here are the routes
There were some people there and you must remember back then people weren'
They couldn't draw or paint so that was the only way they could
say the time And outside there are
more relics of the first crosses
on the 8th and 10th and this matter
In reality it was built into the wall and this one in reality clearly shows
a small amount of Welsh production I believe there are five things
Allan yma and it was really good for me to give it a try
See everyone And this room is noticeably here
In that part of the building is where the archives are located
It can be won in the typing room so that's where the typewriters are
for the hunt And I believe this
will be another piece of Saxon stone
Here you can see the tower looking out over
the different styles of construction with the
different types of Anglo-Saxon watercraft
ormal the doctor on the tower and the next
buildings are even more extreme So yes two
a variety of buildings here You'll also find numerous
productions in the making One looked like
return to the beginning the first thing and the next thing I provide
It looks like one of the Viking runestones I don't get it
Any further information on that but it's a place of fascination
e Vikings' conquest Anglo-Saxon construction
the Normans medieval building This school has been
They were completely using it to locate
the 13th one Absolutely incredible
According to this North Wales school of thought
useful for finding schools If you like schools
Wales in northern Wales is useful for finding and I am not
He's already shared the foundation and a great deal more than that
If you'd like to enjoy a video today if you can
Hope write share the publishing button
All of this is directly connected to you but it's
using my small channel and employing the
algorithm If you'd like to support the channel
A bit more so we can proceed to the paths
feeling it in Yorkshire which is 250 miles from the place where I live
You can use the handwriting to write to me and then that helps with
With the petrol money I can visit more and more shelters
an increasing number of schools but we'll be using the written form for
at's the way we can since many
viewers appearing thus therefore in unison many thanks for watching I will be
