This Home was Built Inside a Forest… Without Touching It 🌿🏡 | Gorakhpur Farmhouse
Set within a 20-year-old mango and teak orchard in Gorakhpur, this 5500 sq.ft farmhouse by W5 Architects is not just built—it is grown from its surroundings.
What makes this home truly extraordinary is its core philosophy: build without erasure. Not a single tree was cut during construction. Instead, the architecture adapts to the land, shaping itself around existing trees, courtyards, and natural views—creating a seamless dialogue between structure and nature.
The house embraces a porous, breathable design, where double-height spaces allow light, air, and visual connections to flow freely across levels. As the day unfolds, sunlight transforms the exposed brick façade, bringing the home to life through shifting patterns of light and shadow.
Materiality lies at the heart of this project. Every third brick was handpicked, ensuring texture and character. Teakwood sourced directly from the site has been repurposed into doors, windows, and even handcrafted furniture—embedding the memory of the land into the home itself. The use of terracotta roof slabs reduces concrete consumption while enhancing thermal comfort and warmth.
Built using a load-bearing structure, the home minimizes steel and cement usage, staying naturally cooler and more sustainable. Every detail—from cane-stitched furniture to sculpted teak elements—was crafted on-site, embracing a philosophy of slow, deliberate making over mass production.
Beyond architecture, this project becomes a celebration of community and craftsmanship, involving local artisans and women workers, while even waste materials were thoughtfully reused in design elements like amphitheater walls and artworks.
The Gorakhpur Farmhouse is not just a retreat—it is a reminder.
That homes don’t always have to dominate nature…
Sometimes, they can simply belong to it.
