Gothic Revival Antique Partner's Desk (19th century Decorative Arts and Neogothic)
An interesting late 19th century piece for the record and probably the largest and grandest gothic revival desk we will see for a while. As gothic and renaissance revival work from the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century constitute a major part of furniture from the modern past, discernment is required to separate the wheat from the chaff.
This desk serves as a benchmark example of late 19th century gothic revival, by virtue of it's artistic flare and exuberant use of this style in a type of piece which did not exist during the original late gothic period circa 1400-1500. Although the channel primarily focuses on pre-industrial (pre-1840 works of art), this piece is an interesting exception to the pre-1840 rule. Despite it's later date of manufacture compared to traditional period furniture, it remains an outstanding, captivating object, and richly hand carved object. Please comment if you have anything to add to out understanding of this unusual Desk.
The video also discusses various phases of the gothic style and elements of gothic decorative vocabulary which are taken from Cathedral architecture.
