In conversation with Nathan Clements-Gillespie, Director of Frieze Masters, Jana Gajdošová, Curator and Medieval Specialist at Sam Fogg (showing at Frieze Masters 2024), offers an insight into the elaborate construction of 15th-century altarpieces and we learn about some of the hallmarks of the late medieval style.
This panel painting is considered a ‘miracle of survival’. Originating in the late 15th century, likely from Vienna, the panel formed part of a winged, double-sided altarpiece. While the exterior side depicts the assumption of Mary Magdalene, its interior portrays the visitation of the Virgin Mary – with the two Mary's having an unusually similar resemblance.
