So we decided to finally take the time and figure it out! The answer may surprise you! It surely surprised us! It was a bit difficult to figure out, considering we have 3 dogs, not just 1! I think the answer we got is a very good average yearly estimate for what it costs to own a dog for one year.
There's the three musketeers
We doing blowing fur around um so you guys have been asking me to do a video talking about
How much it costs to own a dog and we decided we're finally gonna do it
As you guys know we have three dogs not just one dog
So I'm gonna try to do the figures for just one dog so you guys will know
About the average that it costs to own a dog for a year
When you first get a dog you're gonna have the cost of purchasing or adapting the dog which of course we think you should adopt
The dog then there of course there's gonna be the cost to spay and neuter the dog
Which we think everybody should definitely spay and neuter your pets
And then they'll be like the first round of shots the first vet visit those types of things
So when you're ready to go and get a dog you should probably have I would say around at least
$500 saved up for when you get your first dog
Now remember these numbers aren't gonna be the same for everybody. This is just something. I'm estimating and
Like I said, it's all gonna depend on a lot of different factors, but when you first go to get your dog
I would say you probably want to have at least $500 saved up that should be able to
Cover the cost of everything you're gonna need for your new dog
now you guys want to know the yearly cost of
one dog so
Instead of starting with the first year of ownership because there's a lot more things you have to buy when you first get a dog
I'm gonna just start we're gonna say we're gonna start at year two and we're gonna assume that nothing majors happening during this year
We're gonna assume that you have no emergency vet visits. No unforeseen injuries. Nothing like that
We're just gonna get a blanket cost estimate of owning a dog and like I said, this is gonna be just an estimate
I'm doing from my own experience. These numbers may not be the same for everybody
Don't cry. It's not gonna be that bad of a number. I hope
First thing you're gonna need to purchase on a yearly basis
You may not necessarily need all these things, but you're gonna need things like collars, leashes, dog tags, dog bed, toys and so on
I kind of looked through some of the things that I've purchased in the past year and
for one dog
I probably spend around $300 on all those items a year. I mean that's just an average, you know
I don't necessarily have to buy a dog bed every year
I don't necessarily have to buy a collar and a leash every year, but rough estimate for that would probably be about $300
After I figured out the things the supplies and things that we need for a year
I tried to figure out our regular vet visits which include yearly checkups shots that they get every year
purchasing our flea and heartworm
preventative
I'm not really sure what vet visits cost everywhere
So again, this is just an estimate based on what my vet costs. Our office call alone is a $35 office call
So every time we go to the vets automatically $35 plus whatever we need
Monthly our flea and heartworm preventative is about $25
We currently have the dogs on the canine Advantix 2 and then Ivorheart Max for their heart guard prevention
Shots run anywhere from $15 to $25 a shot depending on which shots and what year it is and which ones they have to get
Dog licenses in our county are $25 for the county
So for one dog with no major issues happening our vet costs are about
$550 a year and that's for one dog which that's with no emergencies
Now comes the fun one food
treats vitamins
those types of things
This was a little bit harder for me to figure out because I am currently feeding three dogs. Not just one dog
I feed the girls Canada all life stages is currently what I have them on
I buy a 44 pound bag of dog food and it costs me
$65 so I broke it all down based on how much I feed the dogs each and I estimated that for one dog
I would buy about seven bags of the of that dog food a year, which is about
$455
And then when you add in treats vitamins those types of things in total
I probably spend about six hundred and fifty dollars a year
Per dog in food treats vitamins all of that stuff
Which is kind of a lot of money
So when you add all of those things up the three hundred dollars a year on supplies
the five hundred and fifty dollars a year on vet visits the six hundred and fifty dollars a year on food and treats it ends up
being
for one dog
about
$1,500 a year for just one dog and again, that's an average based on what I personally spend
It does not include things like grooming because we groom our own dogs
It doesn't include boarding because I very rarely if ever board my dogs
Some people do doggie daycare doesn't include that doesn't include obedience classes
Which I've done, you know training classes with Shelby the agility doesn't include any of that any extra vet trips any emergencies
so the cost can vary greatly from the
$1,500 and you know based on your vet based on what you buy for food, but on average
It's probably about $1,500 a year to own a dog
Which is it's pretty good amount of money
Owning a dog is definitely not something you should take lightly as you can see by these numbers. It's a big
responsibility and
It only becomes more as the dogs get older they can start to cost even more
I went through Shiloh's vet records from 2011 only from 2011 and
Shiloh alone cost me
$1,200 in the vet last year
So for the whole year 2011 all of her checkups plus all the other times we had to go to the vet with her was
$1,200 that's a hundred dollars a month just in vet visits
Just for Shiloh only for Shiloh and as you guys know Oakley when we got her
She had surgery back in March. She had eye surgery and that cost us $500
So things can add up very very quickly when you have dogs. They're definitely not cheap to keep around
I mean they're worth it, but they're not cheap
basically once you get past the initial costs of
Purchasing a dog and getting them spayed and neutered and their first shots and vet visits and the supplies and things you'll need
When you first get the dog on average, it'll probably cost you around
$1,500 a year to own a dog could be a little bit more could be a little bit less
But now you can at least be a little bit more prepared
When you go to make your decision on whether or not you want to get a dog
So at $1,500 a year and the fact that I have one two three dogs
It probably costs us about
$4,500 a year for these dogs
Which we already know by the fact that I told you Shiloh's vet bills alone last year were $1,200
It definitely costs us more than that to own three dogs
So it is not something to be taken lightly
Owning a dog is a very big responsibility and it's something you need to be prepared for and the unforeseen things
Oakley surgery for example
We didn't know when we got Oakley that we were gonna have to take her and have that thing removed from her eye and she
Was gonna have a $500 surgery
Luckily, we when we get paid every week
We put a little bit of money aside just in case of emergency for the dogs
I don't have them on pet insurance, but I've thought about it a few times
I've looked into a few different companies and eventually I may decide to get pet insurance for the dogs
But I don't have them on it now. Does anybody out there have pet insurance for your dogs?
Anybody that watches this do you guys have pet insurance? Let me know cuz it's something like I said, we've been looking into
So there you have it. That is our
Guess estimate. I guess it's not really a guess. It's an estimate
I went through a lot of paperwork and looked at a lot of things. I spend money on to figure out these numbers
So it's pretty much a good estimate of what it will cost for you to own a dog a year
I did a little bit of Google research and some of the webpages I found said anywhere between
$900 and $3,000 a year. So we're kind of right in the middle of that. I
I'm I guess we got a pretty good estimate. What do you think Shelby pretty good estimate?
So let us know what you think. Did you have any idea that it actually cost that much money to own a dog?
Honestly, I didn't I I never really thought about it
I never sat down and figured it out. So I really had no idea and that's quite a bit of money
Quite a bit of money to own three dogs
But they're worth it every single penny
Even if Oakley likes to turn around and face the other way every time I pull out the camera
I swear she must be camera shy you to like jump right into it and she's just like I'm not looking at you
You're trying to make a video. I'm not looking
