Designed as a personal manifesto, the house gave Jacob George the opportunity to test long-held design principles that had remained unrealized in earlier projects. Set within a 1.5-acre site shared with his parents’ home, the project explores modular construction, climatic responsiveness, and a deliberate blurring of boundaries between inside and outside. Conceived as a fully modular system, the house prioritizes comfort, adaptability, and ease of maintenance. Walls are built using removable 8’×4’ shera board panels, allowing services to remain accessible and enabling future changes without demolition. The entire building is laid out on a grid derived from these standard panel sizes, reducing material and labour wastage while demonstrating that climate-responsive architecture can emerge from logical, common-sense strategies rather than regional stylistic imitation.

Spatially, the ground floor is organized as an open plan accommodating living, dining, kitchen, verandahs, and a bedroom, with a shallow pool subtly defining zones without enclosing them. The first floor is intentionally minimal, containing a single bedroom with a dressing area and attached bathroom. Climatic control is achieved through passive measures, including deep verandahs around all spaces and the innovative use of agricultural shade netting as a cost-effective solar protection layer. Equal importance is given to interior and exterior spaces, creating a seamless relationship articulated through extensive lawn-facing glazing, while the elevation toward the family house remains largely opaque to ensure privacy. Glazing is designed in 8’×4’ modules, allowing doors and sliding panels to disappear when opened, transforming the living spaces into an open pavilion embedded in the landscape.

The overall sensibility aims for a modern minimalism imbued with warmth, avoiding the sterility often associated with contemporary design. Jacob favours simple, unembellished spaces where nature—foliage and water bodies woven into the architecture—becomes the primary form of decoration, complemented by wood surfaces that add warmth and refinement. Lighting is carefully considered, with indirect concealed lighting and custom-designed accent lamps ensuring the house remains inviting after sunset. Interiors, furniture, and landscape are all designed around the same modular grid, reinforcing a cohesive design language. For Jacob, true design integrity lies in having architecture, interiors, lighting, and landscape shaped by a single vision, and true elegance emerges through profound simplicity.
