The battery compartment is a horrible design and very difficult to use, but the performance of the fan is quite good. The air stream is gentle, but it carries several feet away from the fan and is very quiet. I was overall very impressed with this, the performance is better than many other desk fans of this size I've tested over the years.
Here's a Honeywell Fian. This is the Honeywell HTF030B as in BA-D1. It's a 5 volt DC or 6 volt
battery Fian. I wonder if that number there is some kind of date code. I believe the model name
for this is Turbo2Go. These have been around for a while and I've been curious about them for a
while. But they have a pretty high retail price. I think it's between $15 and $20 and I just
couldn't rationalize spending that. So I said I'm gonna wait. Someday one will show up at the
thrift store for a couple dollars and I'll get it done. And that was today. This one showed up at
the thrift store for all of $2.99 and it appears to be pretty much new. I don't see any dust built
up inside there at all. And generally decent condition as well. So there is a problem here
which I want to solve before we go any further. And that is the fact that it appears to have
crappy cell batteries inside the battery compartment. So let's get this opened up
and get those out before they leak everywhere. Oh too late! They already leaked. There's a surprise.
I wonder if this is still working. Just ever so slightly. It's spinning way slower than it
should. But I have to say I'm already impressed with the amount of air that's coming out of there
for how fast it's going. Well we better get these stupid piece of crap trash batteries
out of there. Now fortunately we seem to have caught this just in time. It's on its way to
try to destroy the fan but I caught it in time before it did so. I think we'll be able to just
scrape that clean without any residual damage.
Shouldn't have to do this but when you use garbage batteries that are the worst kind available
that's what you end up with. These are the worst batteries available today. The worst.
They're horrible. I think that this has more batteries in it because it's not six volts if
there's only two. Looks like this whole thing might... Does this come out of here? It's not very easy to
to work with. There's probably some secret handshake to get this out of here
but I don't know what it is. As I always say if I'm struggling with this
then the average user who's not very mechanical is certainly going to have a hard time with it as
well. So I would say that this is a very poorly designed battery compartment. Oh well that might be
aiding in the difficulty here. The leak show continues. I haven't dealt with this in a while
actually. I'm getting pretty lucky with not running into these pieces of crap.
Okay so we've got all the batteries out of there. Now I'm going to have to clean the compartment.
Junk batteries. Complete junk. Now we've got to spend more money to buy more isopressol alcohol
because of stupid door trash garbage cell batteries. Let's get this all cleaned up here.
I'm so sick of those stupid batteries. They have ruined so much good equipment.
They really caught this just in time. If this had went a couple more days
it could have been catastrophic. Looks like it's just it was just surface
damage at most to the contacts. They're cleaning up just fine.
And what's ridiculous to me is that these stupid batteries continue to fly off the shelves. Like
don't people get the hint? They're not what they used to be at all. I know Duracell used to be a
very good brand but nowadays they're just complete trash. They've been trash for a while now. It's not
anything all that new. They've been trash for a good decade or two now. This contact is going to
take a little bit more to get that cleaned up. Okay I think we're pretty much good there with the
battery compartment. Now we'll load some non-trash a cell garbage piece of trash
worst awful batteries on the planet style batteries in there. Now these are nickel metal hydride
batteries so they're only 1.2 the volts as opposed to 1.5. So this is going to run slightly under
spec because of the reduction in voltage. But I don't keep any alkaline batteries on hand.
Don't like them. Don't use them. So I don't have any to test it with. Sure the heck I'm not gonna
test it with stupid Duracell batteries. Yeah this design is awful to get the in and out of there.
Okay now with new batteries let's try this out again. Okay it works even less than it did before.
Figure that out. Why is that? I'm gonna go through this again. Is it supposed to go like this?
Maybe. It doesn't even tell you which way it should go in. It doesn't appear to go in that way.
Is this busted? Yeah it was busted. The contact had moved down. What's to say it's not going to
move down again as I insert this? It didn't. All right let's try again. It's working. That's
reasonably quiet and I actually can feel that several feet away. That's not too bad. It's not
super strong up front but the air does carry nicely. This is probably a good five feet back
and there's still a considerable draft. Well I have to say I am thoroughly impressed with this.
It's much quieter than I was expecting and I really I can feel this clearly six feet away.
Very interesting. I would use this outside at night on those hot humid nights on an outside
having dinner what have you and I'm not somewhere like on the back deck I have power but in the
front I don't have electricity outside. So I would consider using this in the front at night
and consider that it would move even more air if it had a 1.5 volt batteries in there.
It's 80 percent. It's only running at 80 percent power because of the voltage difference.
It's in perfect balance. I don't feel any kind of vibrations or shaking whatsoever.
No overbatings at all. I'm quite pleasantly surprised by that that I like it.
