A Minimal Mediterranean Retreat | Inside a Small Private House on Formentera Island

Located on the peaceful landscape of Formentera Island, Can Xomeu Rita House is a modest private home that embraces simplicity, climate-responsive design, and a deep connection with its rural surroundings.

The house sits in a natural clearing within the agricultural landscape, carefully positioned alongside traditional dry stone walls and surrounded by fields of wheat and oats. This placement was not accidental—the orientation toward the south ensures optimal sunlight, beautiful open views, and efficient rainwater collection through a cistern system.

The layout of the house is organized into three simple linear strips. The southern edge contains the entrance and a shaded porch that opens toward the landscape, creating the most public and visually connected part of the home. In the center lies an open and flexible living space that combines the kitchen and dining area into one continuous social environment. The northern strip contains the more private zones, where the bedrooms face east and west to capture natural light at different times of the day.

Bioclimatic strategies play a key role in the design. The house is carefully planned to maximize cross ventilation, allowing natural breezes to flow through the interior and maintain comfortable temperatures during the warm Mediterranean summers. At the same time, the depth of the porch has been precisely designed to allow winter sunlight to penetrate the interior while providing cooling shade during the hotter months.

Material choices reinforce the project’s honest and low-budget approach to construction. The architecture openly reveals how the house is built, using exposed honeycomb clay blocks, pine wood structures, limestone, and lime mortars as both structure and finish. These breathable materials help regulate humidity, improve indoor comfort, and create a warm, healthy atmosphere.

Through its simplicity, climate awareness, and use of natural materials, Can Xomeu Rita House becomes a quiet architectural response to its Mediterranean setting—demonstrating how small homes can achieve harmony with both landscape and climate.
