Well I'm back in the Rocky Mountains and today I'm spending the night solo camping in my
hot tent.
Since the snow is deep, I'll be snowshoeing into the marshes where I'll set up camp and
harvest wood in the forest to keep the fire alive all night long.
I'll cook a hot dinner and delicious breakfast on the stove, fish a tiny brook trout stream,
and use the environment to my advantage.
So join me for a camping mission in moose territory.
Well since it's been insanely warm this winter here in Colorado, I've had to come super deep
into the mountains to find any snow.
And if you guys can see that right now, it's like in between snow and rain.
It's like sleeting.
So I think it's just about 32 degrees right now and it's definitely going to drop lower
tonight.
Well this meadow over here could be a good spot.
Let's head off trail.
Oh my gosh.
These snowshoes are not helping at all.
Well also because it's so warm out, the snow is not even snow.
It's straight slush.
Look at that.
It's like a ball.
You can't.
You just sink down.
Oh my gosh.
This is like quicksand.
I actually cannot get up.
Well I'm starting to think this meadow is not the way.
Look at how far I'm sinking down with snowshoes on.
And come to think about it, I don't think this is a meadow.
I think this is a marsh.
See that down there?
That's mud.
Gosh.
My leg is stuck.
Oh.
Dude.
Thank goodness I got a hot tent tonight because my socks and boots and pants and gloves are
soaked.
Okay well, I came a bit farther and this one right here, it could be better.
The snow is much better here.
Well check this out.
These are moose prints.
See these?
Big, deep footprints.
And I forgot what this grass is called but these moose feed on that in the winter.
Well I've trudged my way all the way over here and I think this is going to be a decent
spot to set up the tent tonight.
I'm going to dig this snow well because you can see it's obviously not padded whatsoever
and set up the hot tent right here.
I could dry out that firewood.
Alright, well I've got the rest of my stuff here but I've got to lock in because I've
only got two hours until sunset and I've got a lot to do.
First of all, I've got to grab this shovel out and clear this area for the tent.
Oh man, this is not going to be easy.
As you can see, the snow is really packed together.
I've also noticed that we're at 9,200 feet of elevation so right there, that cloud is
sitting at about 10,000.
And all this brush down here, I'm going to have to chop out with my hatchet.
Well I've been digging for probably an hour now and we've got it cleared out pretty good.
I'm not sure how big this hot tent is.
I'm going to cut out all these weeds first.
Well I just picked up this hatchet yesterday so it should be pretty sharp.
Okay, that should be good.
Well this right here is the Up2 Hot Tent from RBM Outdoors and this is completely out of
the package.
I have not opened this yet.
Luckily they've got a waterproof case.
And the best part about these RBM tents is that they're super easy to set up.
Oh my goodness, it barely fits.
This thing is big.
Take a look inside of this.
Obviously this wool will come out.
Look at this, this can all extend more so once I clear that snow, we're going to have
a lot of room in here.
Yep, this is where the stove comes out.
Well the tent is set up just in the nick of time.
Sun is going down right now.
My gloves are soaked.
And I brought some wood but it's not going to be enough to keep me all warm all night.
Well while I still have a little bit of light left at least, I've got to go find some standing
dead wood and cut them down so I have enough wood.
I'm going to bring my axe and the sled with.
Well that sunset is awesome.
I need a tall thin dead tree.
Even though this is a perfect size, see how it's on the ground, it's going to be moist.
Much more wet than the standing ones.
Well it's getting pretty dark but this one right here is perfect.
The cool part about this hatchet is that it actually can turn into a saw blade too.
And there we go.
There we go.
Yeah, dry as can be in there.
Before I chop the massive log, I'm going to chip off all of these little small branches
from this thing.
Huh.
Let me know in the comments if you guys know what kind of footprints those are.
Well, there's a log.
There's another one.
Plus I don't want to be absolutely baking in there tonight so I'm going to grab a bunch
more sticks and head back to camp.
There we go.
That's good enough.
I've got to see if I can remember where to get off trail.
There's some clouds in the way but it's a full moon tonight.
Back at home base.
Alright, before we need any of this firewood, we've got to get this stove set up.
They've got three doors of insulation on these guys.
Alright, well let's unbox this stove and get it warm in here.
So this fireproof mat goes on the ground.
You put the stove on top of it and they also made all of this fireproof so the heat won't
affect your tent at all.
All of these go inside each other.
Well, this is another cool thing they do with these hot tents.
You can take off the sides so you can see the fire on the inside of your tent.
Bang!
Just like that.
They did a great job designing this.
This goes right at the top, right through.
Fireproof mat.
Since I don't need the stakes, I don't need to use all these extra ropes.
It comes with repair adhesive in case you make any holes in the tent.
Some little patcher tools.
And look at this.
A multi-tool.
Knife, hook, bottle opener, saw.
Oh, I could have been using this.
And a hammer.
Pretty sick.
But man, it is cold outside.
And look at this.
They made it so you can choose to have air vents or close them off and kill the fire.
That should be enough.
Close her up.
And she's going.
Well, I got the fire going pretty good in there, so I think it's time to get everything
else ready so I can set up camp and cook some dinner.
Well, the fire's been only going like five minutes, and it's noticeably warmer in here
already.
There we go.
Well, look at that.
Fire's going real well in there.
And I did bring my thermometer, so we'll see how warm it gets in here tonight.
And I can tell you one thing.
It's definitely warmer than 40 in here, so the temp is going up good.
I just picked up this cheap zipper cut from Walmart, but it should be all I need.
I also just looked in the bag, and they got some storage bags you can clip on.
Clip those on over there so I can put my stuff in them and keep them warmer off the ground.
But obviously, I'm going to link this RBM tent and their whole site down in the description
below so you guys can come check these out.
They're on the higher price side, but they're also obviously on the higher quality side.
You're getting a lot with your purchase.
We're in here.
Fire's going good.
I'm probably going to start cooking dinner.
And pork chops.
Well, for dinner tonight, we're making maple glazed pork chops and a sweet potato.
You can literally just use that as a stove.
Makes cooking so much easier.
Yep.
Perfect.
Look at that.
Got some cowboy butter right here.
Looking good.
All right.
Well, there's some good cooked pork chops.
We got maple syrup.
Just glaze them a little bit.
Mmm.
It is hot in here.
Well, it's already 922 p.m., so that did not take long.
I just strung my boots up above the stove.
I'm trying to dry them out as quick as possible.
So I just stoked the fire a little bit more.
Hopefully that all catches.
But we got a decent amount of wood.
That should get us until at least midnight.
And just a quick camping tip for any of you guys.
If you do have your cot or whatever you're sleeping on, on a slightly slanted hill like
this, always have your head up at the top because if you have your head at the bottom,
the blood's going to be rushing to your head all night and you could blackout and die.
So don't do that.
But we literally just hit 150,000 subs earlier today.
So thank you guys so much for subbing.
Well, that's why you got to be locked in and not like me.
Look at what I just did.
Oh, no.
Just put the adhesive on there.
We'll see if that works.
Look at that.
That literally took two minutes and it's already sealed back up.
Toss this on there.
Okay.
A little bedtime snack.
Maple syrup glazed sweet potato.
I can't say I do this all the time, but it sure is good right now.
Just boiled some snow.
Going to pour this into my...
Well it's now 1030.
Well we got to do the dishes.
But otherwise, I'm going to go to bed.
I'll see you guys in the morning.
It's currently 4 a.m. in the morning right now and there's a massive animal up there
in the trees walking around.
It's got to be a moose.
It's huge.
I can hear it grunting in each footprint step and it's breaking sticks up there.
My fire's completely gone out, so I'm going to start that up to get it warm in here again.
But it's so silent out here.
I can hear them all the way up there walking around.
414 a.m.
There's still a couple embers in there.
Well, it took a lot of work, but we got the fire going again.
I'm going to head back to bed.
I'll see you guys in the morning.
It's freezing cold in here.
I got to get this fire started ASAP.
Stuff the ashes in the ashtray right below.
Well, I got the fire going finally.
We're going to make some protein chocolate chip and strawberry pancakes for breakfast.
The mixing powder.
Butter's a little bit frozen, but toss this guy on the stove.
There's basically one big blob pancake.
Oh, it burnt.
This is terrible.
Another rookie mistake.
I had my boot too close to the pipe.
Burnt the hole right in it.
I should not have put it that close.
It got cold out because...
Whoa!
Never mind.
And I also got some raw honey here.
They look kind of frozen.
Well, the first batch of pancakes looking came out awful, but I think it's still going
to taste super good.
It's just not aesthetically pleasing.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, my gosh.
The frozen strawberries are so good.
13 grams of protein per pancake, and they taste delicious.
Best believe I'm making more of those.
Yes!
There we go.
That is a much better looking big pancake.
I'm going to die this fire down a little bit.
Well, I'm going to clean up and pack out because I'm going to go fishing.
All right.
Well, I'm out of here.
Boy, is it warm.
Spring is coming.
Look at here.
More moose prints.
These ones are fresher, but still not super last night like.
We made it.
All right.
Let's go fishing.
All right.
Let's see if there's any brook trout in this stream.
The water is super clear.
Well, I haven't seen any fish, but they've got to be in here.
They're in this stream, so I'm going to go grab my rod.
Well, I only brought my fly rod, but that's going to do because they're pretty much just
feeding on bugs right now, especially midges.
I don't really have any good colors of those, but got my fly box right here.
I think I'm going to go with a pheasant tail nymph.
Just that little black guy right there.
Well, fly fishing isn't my favorite type of fishing, and I don't have much experience
with it, so we're just going to give it a whirl and see if we can make anything happen.
But I've literally got like 12-pound mono as my leader to this little fly, so we'll
cast this in there, see if anything's around.
Well, I gave it a good bit.
I don't know if this is the move.
It's not a big fishing section of this video, but I'm going to pack up and head out of here.
Hope you guys enjoyed taking it along for this beautiful weather out here in the mountains.
Spring is on its way, so hopefully that means some big fish too, but hope you guys enjoyed.
