ExclusiveBach: Flute Sonata in E BWV 1035
【Classical music and nature 古典音樂小站】Johann Sebastian Bach: Flute Sonata in E, BWV 1035. This beautiful piece was played by Alexander Murray. It has common licence (CC BY-SA 3.0 Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported), and is provided through musopen.org.
Like the Sonata in E minor, BWV 1034, for flute and continuo, this is a very demanding piece for Michael Gabriel Fredersdorf of Potsdam, a flutist who was in the service of King Frederick II of Prussia, a great lover of flute music and a flutist himself. At least, that is what an old copy of the manuscript says, but it is not in Bach's hand.
The distinctive feature of this sonata is the frequent use of accidentals, which is unusual for a Bach sonata. There is also frequent use of a certain dynamic, which is another hallmark of Bach. In addition, the second and fourth movements follow a binary form with an A and B section, each of which is repeated. Another distinctive feature is that although the sonata is in E major, the ‘Siciliano’ movement is in C sharp minor. In most musical notations of this piece, there are few articulation markings because they were added at the time of performance. Furthermore, trills in the Baroque era began on the upper note.
The video was captured by Simone Schlegel in the Ueschinental, Switzerland and edited by Wenjing Ma.
