The US Department of War is preparing troops for a potential operation against Iran that military commanders plan could last several weeks if President Donald Trump gives the order. Reuters reports this , citing high-ranking American officials. According to the agency's sources, this could become a much wider conflict than previous clashes between the US and Iran. The planning for such actions comes amid ongoing diplomatic negotiations over Iran's nuclear program, in particular recent talks in Oman that aimed to restore diplomacy between the countries following the increased American military presence in the region.
The US Department of War is already moving additional forces to the Middle East, including a second aircraft carrier, thousands of troops, fighter jets, guided-missile destroyers, and other combat units capable of both attack and defense. One official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic, noted that the current planning is more complex than the previous operation, which targeted only nuclear infrastructure facilities. In the event of a prolonged conflict, US forces could also target Iranian government and security facilities, not just nuclear ones.
Experts warn that the threat of strikes from Iran and the country's powerful missile arsenal increase the risk of escalation and possible expansion of the conflict throughout the region. The US military expects Tehran to respond to attacks with retaliatory strikes over a prolonged period.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said the president has "all options on the table" on Iran, but did not provide details about the planned operation.
