Conservative Candidate Wins Costa Rica Presidency
The candidate for the governing conservative Party, Laura Fernández, has won the presidential election in Costa Rica, while her ruling party is set to gain a majority in Congress.
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal reported that with votes from 93.7 percent of polling places tallied, Fernández of the Sovereign People’s Party had 48.3 percent of the vote. Her closest challenger was economist Álvaro Ramos of the National Liberation Party with 33.4 percent. Fernández only needed 40 percent of the vote to win outright and to avoid an April 5 runoff.
