235 horsepower Skylane checkout
NEW LENOX
The Cessna Skylane has a six-cylinder Continental engine, cowl flaps and a constant speed propeller. Today’s flight involved slow-flight, power-off stalls, power-on stalls, strep turns and practice landings.
Compared to the Skyhawk, the Skylane has massive power. The airspeed indicator displays the speed in miles per hour. In cruise, we zoomed along at 140 miles per hour.
In level flight, one closes the cowl flaps to reduce drag. On takeoff, the cowl flaps are open to cooling the engine.
Doing touch-and-goes, it was difficult to remember to leave 20 degrees of flaps in for the departure on the go. I would reach over to the lever and try to retract them fully.
This is not a retractable-gear model. No chance of a gear-up landing.
