A South Jersey man is behind bars tonight after police say he fled a traffic stop and fired at
officers. It all played out last night after state troopers pulled over a car here in Millville.
The passenger allegedly then ran from that scene on foot turning and taking aim as those troopers
then took cover. New Jersey correspondent Trish Hartman has the story tonight. That suspect is
now charged with attempted murder and weapons charges including possession of hollow point
ammunition. He allegedly shot at state troopers after what started as a traffic stop.
Gunshots rang out in Millville. Authorities saying it started as a traffic stop.
New Jersey state police say two troopers were making that stop at 4th and Sassafras here in
Millville around 6 45 Tuesday evening. Two people were in a silver Santa Fe and troopers say the
passenger 42 year old James Ziegler III provided false information before getting out of the car
and running away. Troopers chased him and they say he fired four shots at them but the troopers
took cover behind parked cars. I heard three gunshots um I didn't think not enough I know
sound kind of close. The shots were fired near 6th and Sassafras streets near B&B Barbershop.
They said one individual opened fire on the police officer state trooper actually
and got out and ran and fled on foot. Chopper 6 was over the scene as investigators worked for
hours looking for surveillance video. Ziegler was later found at a residence about a mile away
and taken into custody. Folks around here say it was a scary situation. There's been a lot
of activity in Millville but I think they're doing the best they can with what they have.
Yes it does concern me because there's a lot of innocent people and a lot of times you know
innocent people is the ones that will get hurt. The driver of that vehicle was also arrested and
charged with obstruction. Police have not said why they were making that traffic stop in the
first place. Ziegler is locked up in the Cumberland County Jail pending a detention
hearing. Reporting in Millville, New Jersey, Trish Hartman, Channel 6 Action News.
