Starship being the biggest rocket in the world, that’s true. Starship being the most powerful rocket ever built, also true. And Starship taking humans to the Moon and Mars someday, that’s absolutely true.
But here’s another truth we can’t ignore: the Starship we see today still can’t even compare to Falcon 9, not even close. Just look at the numbers. In the last two Starship flights, SpaceX managed to launch a total of just 16 Starlink dummy satellites over roughly four months. Meanwhile, Falcon 9 routinely launches 23 to 30 real satellites per mission, flying on average once every two days.

That massive gap exists for a very simple reason.
For the past two years, SpaceX has been completely tied up with Starship flights that are still officially classified as test flights. And the harsh reality is, this vehicle has had to fight through a long list of serious problems. Failures in composite overwrapped pressure vessels, fuel leaks, ignition system issues, heat-shield damage, all of these have created major complications during both launch and landing.
Of course, after every flight, SpaceX has managed to fix a large portion of those issues. But even now, things are still far from where they need to be.
That’s exactly why 2026 is such a critical year. Starship will be forced to face far tougher challenges if it wants to reach one major goal by the end of the year: officially becoming the world’s first fully reusable commercial rocket.
And to get there, this vehicle first has to hit several key milestones.
