Elon Musk's Insane Starship Plan Shocked NASA: Skip Mars? Starship Moon Landing Sooner...
Elon Musk once declared that Moon missions were just a distraction from the real goal: getting to Mars.
But less than a year later, he's pouring everything into the Moon, shifting SpaceX's focus back to lunar missions harder than ever before.
As the CEO of SpaceX, did he realize something game-changing that made him completely rewrite the company's future plans? And what does it mean for upcoming Moon and Mars missions?
Let's break it all down in today's episode of Alpha Tech.
Elon Musk's Insane Starship Plan Shocked NASA: Skip Mars? Starship Moon Landing Sooner...
About a year ago, Elon Musk was very clear about his position. He said, “No, we’re going straight to Mars. The Moon is a distraction,” and even doubled down with, “Stopping at the Moon simply slows down getting to Mars.”
But fast forward just a few months, and Musk’s tone has completely flipped.
Suddenly, we’re hearing about plans for Moon Base Alpha during presentations at Starbase. On X, he’s posting bold statements like “SpaceX will lean in big on the Moon,” or even more provocatively, “When the mass driver on the Moon gets going, I’m not sure money will be relevant.”
To put this into context, the mass driver Musk is referring to is essentially a massive electromagnetic launch system, think of it as a giant railgun or electromagnetic catapult built on the lunar surface. Its job would be to “shoot” cargo, raw materials, satellites, or even spacecraft into orbit or deep space at extremely low cost.
And Musk’s argument goes even further.

Once a system like this is operational, he believes traditional ideas of financial accumulation start to lose importance, because access to space resources, energy, and mass becomes the real source of power and value.
But is that really the main reason Musk changed SpaceX’s direction? Almost certainly not.
First, when Musk made those strong pro-Mars statements, it was January 3rd, 2025. At that time, SpaceX was gearing up for Starship Flight 7, the very first flight of Starship Version 2. But things didn’t go smoothly. After several vehicles broke up mid-air due to issues like resonance vibrations, fuel leaks, and other technical failures, to the point where many in the community openly called it a “broken” version.
