Welcome back to more springtime in Iowa. It's like mid-March. We got a lot of
things we want to do today. First thing we're gonna do this morning is the boys
came in probably a couple days ago and on the same ridge we were hinge cutting
and kind of clearing out. Last year we got a lot more work to do and they
burned kind of a few more spots that we want to get in right down the point of
this ridge. There's another big shag bark hickory flat down over on that ridge is
another one and you know every every I'm no expert but the more and more I learn
about it it's like every you know all of your situations are totally different
you know a big Jeff Sturgis fan and he's like hinge cutting is not for everyone
and it's definitely not but in our case we have so many giant hickory with no
undergrowth and we're trying to get in there open up some sunlight for
undergrowth and I'll show you a little bit later on we have one that was done
like one ridge that was done three years ago we have another ridge that was done
last year and then obviously we'll do one this year and just kind of show the
progression of it and how much undergrowth and how much bedding and how
much browse has come up for these deer and we got this one big ridge we're just
trying to make you know the value and utilize the property as much as possible
because a big open park like Ridge it's not super useful not a lot of oaks and
if they are oaks they're overcrowded no cover for bedding no browse they're just
if it's that Ridge they're just really passing through they're really not doing
a whole lot so kind of dump some trees make some instant cover along with
opening up the underground obviously already burned it well we brush hogged
and burned it just to get all the little tiny scrappy stuff multifloral
rows and all the invasive jump stuff out so we're gonna do that today we're gonna
hang some trail cameras today for turkeys and we are going to set up some
turkey spots really not even blinds just more spots and situations where we can
get in plop a deer down put out a decoy and we're good to go in the morning with
the bow so I kind of run through the bow hunting turkey setup ideally for the bow
what I like to do yeah springtime time to do some stuff I've created a helmet
Andrew's making fun I could have got the ones with the this these were tinted but
I decided not to I figured you'd make fun of me even more hey I got to keep
all my my my smart my smart brain cells
it's a great thing during shed season I'm kind of marked this up these white
little rings is what we what I wanted to hinge especially right now kind of
really quick little spots just a couple hours we did that one and I still hop
over here maybe another day I can get in here but it's just good to kind of
utilize yeah especially during shed season even just you know like this
circling areas where I just want to get in there and hinge and cut I don't know
maybe 30 trees probably 30 or 40 something like that but now in
transition go do some turkey stuff we made to the famous turkey blind that we
shot the turkey out of last year but it needs some TLC it's always good to come
in here if you do the natural blind natural blinds mainly just setups that
you know I like sitting on the ground shooting turkeys especially with the
it looks better for video and see everything of course always fine if you
just pop up a ground blind and hunt out of it but I love seeing and hearing and
adding the challenge to it we're on this field that honestly we were hunting with
Derek late season in bunch of turkeys are always in it they roost on this
riverbank right here and all those big trees you can slip in actually there's
this big tree over there too they roost in those big trees and there's a good
chance every morning that something's gonna fly down in the field and I love
running the single half strut Jake good good high quality one that really does
I've used a couple different brands but it's a good high quality half strut Jake
and especially earlier in the season like April what soon if you get in a May
they get a little more not as aggressive I feel but they see that bad boy and they
they get fired up and they come right up to him it's a visual thing that's why I
love like field hunting or kind of open woods hunting when I'm doing it like
that with the bow wanting them to come attack the decoy or coming close to the
decoys long single Jake at about 12 to 15 yards I love getting uptight kind of
how like this tree already fell down and stuff so we kind of just tucked up in
there and we didn't call or anything you just see they see the decoy and they run
so I'm gonna put this chair in there kind of readjust some of these branches
and just make sure everything's good also setting these up you know obviously
if you're not filming your hunts you don't have to worry about it but we we
film our hunts so we got to think about camera guy situation so kick all that
out camera guy will be right here you can see good and then I will be down low
right there so it kind of be like a over-the-shoulder type shot and that's
how we we got the shot from last year I feel like any sort of production stuff
that turns out really really awesome is you get the setups dialed in if it's
deer hunting turkey hunting I mean it's just the sort of deal where it's like
preparation you get higher success and cooler things so get our spots in and we
access you know thinking about our access we bump in right through here
come down we got roost trees roost trees roost trees roost trees fly down in this
field and you'll be good so I definitely want to clear this out a little bit more
and get it brushed in a little bit I got a hide a big cat this time around
just level my chair out a little bit more I'll be there you'll be there right
over the shoulder that's blind number one I'd like I'd love to get three just
in case it we need to mix things up a couple different spots setup number two
is done we actually we had all the brush we needed we just cleared out a little
spot in this this is a little little clover food plot at the edge of a big
cornfield and we just have tons of roost options all the way around us and
typically they roost down there and then slowly work their way up into this
clover plot before heading out into this main corn so setting up these little
spot little setup spots in areas where already turkeys are but what maybe I'll
do here too is now is a great time to put out a couple tact cams too because
this is a no I mean this is gonna be clover it's gonna be a normal you know
pathway for turkeys to be traveling all the way through till turkey seasons over
so maybe we'll put a trail camera out right here right in front of this blind
today is gonna be my opening day of turkey season it's a couple days in but
we just made it to a permission farm that has a lot of birds on it so we got
to make our blind this morning though we we decided to not hunt our pre-made
blinds just because I want to hunt this place and there's a lot of turkeys I saw
a lot of turkeys in them in the fall so I know there's a lot we're gonna sit
right on the edge of this big river bottom kind of get tucked into this
little corner of this field so we cut some cedars down we got a drag them in
with us get set up we got probably yeah a lot of time I should we got 40 minutes
until legal light so we just got about a 250 300 yard walk down here get set up
and hopefully it's just in time for them to gobble right when we sit down I
bet right when we sit down get all set up and you're like fine-tuning the
anything really close but we got a pile of them down this riverbank I don't know
it's probably 800 thousand yards and then we got some across this pretty good
size river on the neighbor's field they flew down into it so we just kind of
gotta sit see where they disperse out to still early enough they're gonna be
super grouped up so that one's not too far right behind us.
Just like that buddy!
Give me some dude!
Oh my gosh!
I was just like Andrew's like I think I think one flew straight down okay like
two flew that way one flew straight down and then it's like I heard I was like I
literally said I hear spitting and just turn the camera on and he's flying in
stone-cold he saw me just get the full draw there a little bit and he's like
what's that I told you we're gonna go on a little killing spree here that's how
it's supposed to work right there first kill with the new turkey bow build to
this thing's rigged out short little stab stabilizer super lightweight 60
pounds just the perfect deal we give him a minute just a quick is kicking but
he's a beautiful bird spring turkey bow man I'm like shaking it's like the
adrenaline dump happened right after cuz it just he literally flew down and it
was just like right here right now the beard we got one beard yeah just a thick
rope we gotta go find a triple beard oh yeah we gotta go we did see a triple beard I just
love Iowa easterns like any any big old eastern like this is a big old rope on
them comes running in the head chopper did it did a deal on them might have to
my big push this year I don't like the the graphic the goriness and we're not
trying to glorify that but my big thing this year that I've been pushing that's
why we did the turkey arrows that's what I've been talking about it so you're
going to bow hunt turkeys the most ethical thing to do is to shoot them in
the head the the wound rate on turkeys is so incredibly high with the bow when
you body shoot them so I'm trying to do a push like if you're trying to bow hunt
turkeys you know let's try to shoot them in the head that's just kind of what I feel like is right
especially for bow hunt turkeys just because the wound rates are so incredibly high
because it is so incredibly tough to shoot a turkey in the body so we got this
rigged out done it quite a few times now and I just love it every time
we just kind of push up into the decoys and stuff it's just like God
