Located on the Sunshine Coast, this home is nestled between the forest and the sea – a sanctuary subtly raised above the ground to celebrate both privacy and connection. Designed by Hive Architecture, the home blends into its surroundings through a layout that draws in the landscape.

Anchored by a central courtyard, the house offers a spatial choreography that balances openness and privacy. Each volume revolves around a garden core, creating a visual and physical connection to the outdoors while shielding residents from public view. This is a house designed between forest and sea, where the act of welcoming guests to the home is performed gently and theatrically – starting with a floating concrete staircase, passing under a canopy of palm trees through the entrance porch, and opening into a large living room that opens to the sky through high windows and laminated glass.

Natural light flows through skylights and skylights, while a subtle color palette and soft materials allow the architecture to blend in with its surroundings. With automated blinds, lighting, and temperature control, comfort is seamlessly integrated into the living and sleeping spaces – especially in the master bedroom. The resort-style space is a haven of relaxation, exemplified by the installation of the Eight Sleep Pod for restorative sleep.

Circulation becomes an experience as residents move along a glass bridge connecting the main lobby to the bedrooms. This moment of immersion in the landscape blurs the line between architecture and the environment. The design extends outwards with a series of outdoor areas including the pool, living room and pool house – all layered to support family life and relaxed hospitality. From outdoor moments to evenings by the fire, the spaces embrace the subtropical climate while maintaining a sense of privacy and tranquility.

When flood mapping requirements required structural elevation, the design team took this as an opportunity to enhance the home’s sense of security. The result is a space that is solid, protective, yet open to its surroundings. This architectural response not only addresses the practical issue, but also reinforces the emotional intent of the design – to create a home that lives between the trees and the sea, both figuratively and literally.

The finished house is layered and responsive. Materials are tactile yet muted, and the transition between inside and outside is deliberately blurred. Every threshold is considered – not as an edge, but as an invitation to pause. This is a house situated between trees and sea, not just in location but in spirit. It offers a gentle stillness amid the hustle and bustle, proving that connection to space is not just what is seen, but what is felt within.

With its carefully crafted form and subtle connection to the landscape, this house reflects a shared vision between architect and client. It captures the serenity of the setting without being ostentatious, and as a result, achieves a rare tranquility. A space shaped by nature, privacy, and thoughtful living, the house is a resonant expression of architecture as a place of refuge.
