Should I put my finger over the crossguard when holding a sword?

Today we look at a little piece of sword technology called the ricasso, the unsharpened extension of the tang that allows you to safely put your finger over the top of the cross guard on some swords, why this is sometimes a good idea, and sometimes a terrible idea.
