Hello everyone! I have recently taken a trip by motorbike to Tam Dao - a famous mountainous region with majestic landscapes and many European-style buildings, located in Vinh Phuc province, Vietnam, now a part of Phu Tho.

This is my fifth visit to this town, often known as a mini Sa Pa, but it was my first trip to this dreamy land on cloud, just about 80 km from Hanoi.

Unlike many previous long trips to various regions of the country, this time I didn’t plan meticulously and didn’t prepare in advance. As a result, I had some quite interesting experiences.

Many young people watching this clip may have traveled to Tam Dao before. However, based on my personal experiences, I still want to share a few things to keep in mind for those who plan to visit.

Firstly, prepare suitable clothing: Tam Dao is over 900 meters above sea level, with a cool climate year-round. Visitors can enjoy the changing atmosphere of all four seasons in a single day, regardless of the time of year. Therefore, for all travelers, especially backpackers, it’s advisable to bring a light jacket even if it’s not winter. Rain can also come unexpectedly, so an umbrella is very useful.

Secondly, enjoy tea under the night lights: Tam Dao has many cafes and karaoke bars, but if you prefer a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, you can bring tea and a tea set to enjoy in a chill environment. I had this wonderful experience, gazing at the serene night view from above, which was very romantic.

Thirdly, about food: If you have time and convenience, you can prepare some grilled food, which is both cheap and customizable, and borrow a grill from your homestay instead of ordering pre-prepared grilled food.
In terms of safety, when walking around the town at night, be mindful of vehicles, as there are often racing teams. Be careful when moving, especially around corners or deserted roads.

Next is about room bookings: If you have a planned itinerary, that’s fine, but if you suddenly feel inspired to grab your backpack and go, and find that beautiful view rooms are fully booked, don’t be disappointed, as there are still many spots outside to enjoy the views. Moreover, you’ll have time to stroll and explore. One important note when booking rooms is to be cautious of fake pages that might scam you. They create accounts that look like real brands and ask for online transfers to reserve rooms. I almost lost money to this.

Finally, one very important thing: Be sure to check your vehicle thoroughly, especially the brakes. The road to Tam Dao is beautiful but full of winding slopes; if your vehicle isn’t safe, it can be very dangerous. Once again, make sure to check everything carefully. If you encounter issues on the road, you may spend a lot of time waiting for repairs, although there are mobile mechanics in Tam Dao.
