On behalf of Colonel Hammonds, the Airborne Ranger Training Brigade Commander
and Major General Buzzard, the Commanding General for Fort Moore, Georgia
I'd like to welcome you to the Hurley Hill Ranger Action Demonstration
I'm Sergeant First Class Santos, an instructor here at the Darby Fazer Ranger School
Currently I'm assigned to Bravo Company
4th Ranger Training Battalion
During the American colonial period, ranger techniques and methods of operation
were inherent characteristics of our frontiersmen
As early as the 1700's, these frontiersmen
commonly referred to as rangers, were patrolling our frontier from New England
to the Carolinas in defense against the Indians
Probably most famous of these early ranger units was Rogers Rangers
Organized in 1756 by Major Robert Rogers
Presently, over 400 ranger units have been organized by such leaders
as Morgan, Merrill, and Darby
Their success and gallantry in combat is legendary
In World War II, ranger battalions operated in the Mediterranean and South Pacific
and led the way onto the beaches of Normandy
During the Korean conflict, volunteers were trained right here at Fort Moore
They were organized into 18 airborne ranger companies
17 of which were airborne, of which 7 saw combat in the conflict
upholding the high ranger standards of courage and daring
Airborne ranger companies served from the Republic of Vietnam
from the Delta to the DMZ
providing long-range reconnaissance and surveillance
to eyes and ears of commanders in the field
In 1983, 1st and 2nd Ranger Battalions led the way
conducting an airborne assault on the island of Granada
during Operation Urgent Fury
More recently, ranger qualified leaders in various units throughout the Army
have been vital to the successful accomplishment of Operation Desert Storm
Restore Hope in Somalia
Uphold Democracy in Haiti
Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan
and Operation Iraqi Freedom
The ranger course is 61 days in duration
and is divided into 3 phases
With each phase being at a separate geographical location
that varies in terrain
from steep rugged mountaintops to coastal swamps
The Darby phase of the ranger school is 3 weeks in duration
as conducted by the 4th Ranger Training Battalion
followed by 3 weeks in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Talonica
conducted by the 5th Ranger Training Battalion
followed by 3 weeks in the swamps of Florida
located at Eglin Air Force Base
conducted by the 6th Ranger Training Battalion
The purpose of the ranger course is to develop the leadership capabilities
in confidence, competence, and combat functional skills
in selected officer and non-commissioned officer volunteers
in ranger tactics and techniques
so that they, upon the completion of the ranger course
can return to their units with the capability to conduct ranger-type training
thus increasing the high standard of training in the United States Army
and giving all infantry units the capability to conduct ranger-type missions
The ranger course is realistic, rugged, and to a degree hazardous
The ranger student is taxed both physically and mentally
throughout his 9 weeks of training
In summary, we feel that the ranger course is the highest state
of combat preparedness training that exists in the United States Army today
We will now showcase some of the tactics and techniques the ranger is taught to use
The first technique rangers are trained to use is demolitions
Extensive demolition training enables a ranger to attack
and destroy a wide variety of objectives
and although there are several types of explosives
Composition C-4 is one of the most commonly used
As you can see, it is a white plastic explosive
that can be cut or molded into any shape
Due to the pliability of this explosive
it can be used to construct a wide variety of expedient charges
Charges such as the ribbon charge
The ribbon charge is used to cut a regular shape
as well as flat-sealed targets, such as shown here
Next, we have the shape charge
The shape charge is used against any hard-surface objectives
such as a road or a vehicle
It can be readily improvised using any cone-shaped material
This one has been constructed using a number 10 can
we have created the cone shape in the C-4
Notice, all the charges are dual-prime to ensure positive detonation
Finally, we have the timber-cutting charge
There are many ways to employ this charge
You can either have it as we do here, with the charge on one side of the tree
and the kicker charge placed further up the tree
or, you can cut a section of the tree
placing the C-4 into the cut
Once again, place the kicker charge higher up on the tree
to ensure direction of fall
You can simply encircle the entire tree with something like a ribbon charge
Charges are prime using the modernized demolition igniter
most commonly referred to as MDI
Ladies and gentlemen, if you focus your attention to the far side of the pond
you will see a conex, which is what's under your charge
being used to blow the doors open
You will also witness the detonation of some of these other expedient charges
I'm currently assigned to Alpha Company
I'm part of the mountaineering instruction taught here at the Ranger Corps
This technique used to descend a vertical surface
by means of a mechanical device
is taught for several reasons
First, it helps that Ranger student overcome their
inherent fear of heights
Secondly, it teaches them an additional capability
Rangers then learn that there is virtually no
impassable terrain through a well-trained
and well-led force
In order to repel certain items of mountaineering equipment are essential
First is the Kern Mantle Rope
This rope is 11 millimeters in diameter
150 feet in length
and has a tensile strength of 4,800 pounds
Another characteristic of this rope is its lack of elasticity
which means that this rope will only stretch
2% under working conditions
To descend, the Ranger will face the anchor point
and merely walk backwards down the cliff
At any point during his descent, the Ranger has
a desire to stop, simply tighten the grip
of his right hand around the rope
His right hand acts as a brake hand, supports his weight
as well as controls his rate of descent
His left hand is merely a balancing or a stabilizing agent
To continue with his descent, the Ranger will
loosen the grip of his right hand from the rope
and then proceed with his repel
In many cases, it may become necessary to haul
personnel and equipment up a vertical surface
The vertical haul line consists of a large heavy A-frame
that is constructed and latched together
at the top of the cliff with sufficient climbing rope
to reach the bottom
The ends of the rope run through a pulley or snap link
that is attached to the apex of the frame and are tied together
creating what is known as an endless rope
in the direction in which he is descending
His left hand acts as a brake hand
thus freeing his right hand up to fire his weapon
should it become necessary to do so
during his descent
In the event that a soldier is slightly wounded
Rangers are taught multiple
Couch Tee evacuation techniques
One of these techniques is the Buddy Repel
The Couch Tee is secured to the Ranger by means
of a nylon runner and a snap link
to the Ranger's own snap link
The Couch Tee rides in front of and across the lap
of that Ranger
If at any point during the descent
the Couch Tee requires any medical attention
the Ranger can simply brake and apply it
Once life-saving aid has been given
the Ranger can then proceed with his descent
For demonstration purposes
you will observe a recon team
fast rope onto the far shore
Ladies and gentlemen, please go ahead and direct your attention
to the demonstration area on the far shore
Rangers are taught techniques
on small boat operations
for both inland waterways and coastlines
These boats come in various sizes
including the F-470 Zodiac
approaching to your front left
This boat is capable of carrying up
to 10 fully equipped Rangers
As you notice, once the Rangers step foot on ground
they organize themselves into a squad column
fire team wedge
This formation is easy to control
and allows for 360 degree security at all times
The squad leader has the additional responsibility
as being the patrol leader
He is armed with the M-4 Carbine
The M-4 Carbine is the upgraded version of the M-16
The M-4 has a shorter barrel
than the M-16 and a collapsible stock
The two team leaders
The Alpha Team Leader and the Bravo Team Leader
The Alpha Team Leader is in charge of
frontal security, route selection
and lane navigation
The Bravo Team Leader is in charge of rear security
and aiding the squad leader as the assistant patrol leader
Both are armed with the M-4 Carbine
The Automatic Rifleman
The first Automatic Rifleman is armed with
the M-249 Squad Automatic Weapon
commonly referred to as the SAW
The SAW is a fully automatic weapon system
that fires from the open bolt position
and fires rounds from a two and a round ammunition drum
or magazines may also be utilized
in emergency situations
The other Automatic Rifleman is armed
with the XM-250
The XM-250 is the U.S. Army's feature replacement
for the M-249
The XM-250 is a fully automatic weapon system
that fires from the open bolt position
is piston driven, weighs 12 pounds unloaded
and is chambered in 6.8mm
The Grenadiers
The Grenadiers are armed with the N-320 Grenade Launcher
The N-320 Grenade Launcher
fires a variety of multipurpose rounds
including high explosive,
illumination, buckshot
and CES
These rounds are carried on a belt that can hold up to 12 rounds
And finally the Rifleman
The first Rifleman is armed
with the M-4 Carbine
The other Rifleman is armed
with the XM-7
The XM-7 increases the Ranger's capability and performance
in range, accuracy
and lethality
Mounted on the XM-7 is the XM-157 Fire Control
which allows for automated reticle adjustments
and improved range estimation
One of the Riflemen has the additional responsibility
as being the squad's RTO
or Radio Telephone Operator
He's equipped with the ANPRC-119
Syngar's Tactical FM Radio
This radio is utilized for secure voice
and data communications when hired
The other Rifleman carries the Mounted Air Equipment
that the squad may have to utilize
during their patrol
As you can see distributed throughout the squad are such items like the
ENVG Bravo, PEC-15
M-72 Law
Claymores, Hand Grenades
and the RFR Bag
The ENVG Bravo
The ENVG Bravo is a day or night time optical system
that increases the Ranger's capability and performance
during hours of limited visibility
The ENVG Bravo
is the U.S. Army's future replacement
for the PVS-14
The PEC-15 is a target designator
that can designate a target out to 400 meters
during the hours of limited visibility
through the use of a night division device
The M-72 Law is a disposable, single shot
anti-armor weapon system
that can penetrate up to 12 inches of armor
The Claymores are an anti-personnel mine
that is comprised of one and a half block
of C4 and when detonated
projects over 700 steel balls
towards its target
Additionally, each Ranger is equipped
with two hand grenades
Every Ranger in the formation
is a Ranger First Responder Qualified
The Rangers that are equipped with the Ranger First Responder Bag
are capable of treating, triage
and evacuating any life-earning injuries
found on the battlefield today
Ladies and gentlemen, this light and tree squad
is organized and equipped for a combat patrol
Please give them a round of applause
We'll demonstrate the log walk rope drop
This consists of climbing the vertical ladder
walking across the horizontal beam
negotiating the step obstacle in the middle
making his way to the far side
Once on the far side, the Ranger will mount the rope
utilizing either the commando or monkey crawl
making his way down to the Ranger tab
where he will then request permission to drop
some 40 feet into the water
Hurry up, Ranger
You know what to do
Family, special guests
What do you think? Make him do one more?
Graduating class, what do you think? One more?
I don't think that one counted
Graduating class, what do you think?
Drop, Ranger
With hand-to-hand combat
and the confidence and aggressiveness to fight hand-to-hand
the Ranger is able to attack
and defeat their opponent
In combat, our Rangers are often faced with complex situations
in which the enemy may be difficult to recognize
Imagine a team of Rangers
conducting a combat patrol in enemy territory
when they encounter a suspicious individual
who appears unarmed, but becomes hostile
On the ground
On the ground, do it now
Hurry up
Move
During hand-to-hand combat, it is inevitable that the fight will end up on the ground
To defeat this form of attack
Rangers are trained in the grappling techniques of Jiu-Jitsu
You'll notice my demonstrator is on the top
or mounted position
From this position, he can deliver various strikes
with his fists or elbows
numerous arm bars
and even chokes
the cross-collar choke
You will now see my demonstrator is on the bottom position
Though he is on the bottom, he is still the dominant fighter
He uses his legs to control the distance between himself and his opponent
Also from this position
he can deliver various strikes
chokes
and even arm bars
Throughout the Ranger course
we also teach a series of holds, throws, and takedowns
The right hip throw
The double leg takedown
The front leg takedown
As you can see
this leaves my demonstrator in a very vulnerable position
The left hip throw
The right hip throw
The left leg takedown
The right leg takedown
is the resolve to bounce back from setbacks,
the discipline to stay the course,
and the courage to lead from the front.
