How To Fix a Broken Arrow

What's up everyone welcome back to another video we want to talk about broken arrows, right?
I'm sure you saw in the thumbnail the title of the video how to fix a broken arrow
Nothing ruins a shoot more than shooting an arrow thinking
It's a good shot either missing or just hitting something and your arrow breaks
So I want to go over how you can fix a broken arrow whether
You shot the end off
shooting a rock or a steel plate or
You get a complete break. There's just a few things you're gonna need
fix these arrows
Get yourself empty soda can
An old napkin preferably crumpled up and an old banana peel
What do these items have to do with fixing a carbon arrow or better yet? How are they going to fix a carbon arrow?
Don't worry. I'm about to show you you got to pay attention because this part happens actually really fast
Take your arrows get in one hand get your other items grab them in the other hand you walk them over here to this receptacle
You toss them in there. All right in all seriousness guys
Broken or splintered carbon arrows are actually super dangerous. Not only for yourself, but for those that are shooting next to you
I've had a close call one time. Luckily. I checked the arrow prior to that prior to shooting it my dad on the other hand
It wasn't so lucky. We had a target that it tipped over on at a 3d shoot
hit his arrow and it actually
Fell on the ground and the arrow was really yanked like that cranked pretty hard
We never checked it
I gave him the arrow and then on the next target he actually shot
The arrow snapped in half and he got a whole bunch of carbon splinters in his hand
And from what I hear those are like the worst feeling splinters that anybody can get
They take forever to fester and and get out naturally
It's almost impossible to get them all out with tweezers because there's just so many of them
They they just shatter into a thousand little pieces
So what I kind of want to go over in this video all joking aside
is just the different ways that we check our arrows when we shoot when you know, you have arrows that slap in the target or
If you have arrows that are crisscrossing in the target
You always want to double check your your shafts your points your insert connects to your shaft and also where your knock
Goes into the shaft as well
All right
so probably the most common and easiest thing to do as far as checking arrows when you're out shooting is
When you do notice arrows hitting or crashing into each other on a target give it the flex test
I think most carbon arrow boxes from the manufacturer will talk about that or they have a little picture
It's simple. All you gotta do is just take your arrow. You just give it a couple flexes and you twist it as you're going
if there is a crack or
Compromised area on the arrow it will snap
I did have an arrow that that happened with I was shooting. It was a 3d tournament
I was on one side of the stake. My buddy was on the other side of the stake
We were about four feet apart
I had shot first and my arrow went in like this and then my buddy shot and he
Actually crossed arrows and I it sounded real funny to me
So I knew to check something and luckily I did because as soon as I pulled the arrow out
I went to flex test it and I barely had any pressure and the arrow just snapped right in half
So luckily I did that because if I would have shot that arrow on the next shot
It would have just completely blown up and I'm sure I would have gotten a whole bunch of shrapnel in my hand
You can either give it the flex test while you're out in the field shooting
After every target or after every time that you hear an arrow hit your arrow
Or if you're at the range and you have a table you can always check it on the table
So if you put it down on the table, make sure it's sturdy. You can do one of these
Same thing as a flex test you want to twist it
All you got to do is just kind of snap snap your finger down get that arrow to vibrate if there is any cracks it
It will show up you can do it on both sides flip the arrow back and forth
Another one that is common sometimes especially in the closer targets or if you're shooting at the practice spots
Say you shot six arrows at 20 yards on the same target and you put them all in an inch inch and a half group
You always want to check the knocks a lot of time
You're gonna have a little bit of distortion in the knock. You'll see a little divot taken out on the top edge of the knock
Sometimes sometimes it'll be right here
But what'll happen if you're not paying attention, you can actually split the shaft on the top right here
a good way to find out too is to twist your knock if it's really
Twisting freely then you know that there's a split even if you can't see it and you don't want to shoot that arrow
It's basically that arrow is trash now unless unless you want to cut, you know
A couple inches off and give it to a little kid
But other than that, I just I tend to just throw them away
You can even if you're not sure the knock still kind of tight, but it looks like there's a split
all you have to do is just add downward pressure and just pivot on your index finger like this and
Just kind of move that around and it'll it'll actually open up that split if there's a crack on there
Another way to check for splinters or chips in an arrow is to take a q-tip or a cotton ball
What you want to do, obviously, we know this one's broken, but it works the same
You want to take the q-tip or the cotton swab the cotton ball and you want to just wipe it across
What it will happen is the little hairs on these cotton balls. They'll actually grab on to any chips or
Divots in the carbon and it'll catch and you actually feel it catch and it'll leave leave some of the hairs on that
So if that does happen
Then you know that there is a chip or crack or splinter in that shaft and you know that that's one to either put in
The back of your quiver till you get home or to toss in a trash can if there's one nearby
Well, like I was saying earlier
My dad actually had a run-in with a broken arrow at one of the 3d shoots
Once you go ahead and tell him what happened. He likes to blame everybody but himself
We still haven't got it removed, but I've learned to work with it
That's actually about where it hit
So that's why we tell you to always check your arrows and we were in a 3d shoot shot a large elk target
And the guys pulling the arrows stayed and we're pulling them out of the elk and the rest of us walked to the next target
What we didn't know is they'd knocked the elk target over so all the arrows flexed really hard when it hit the ground
They hand me my arrow. I didn't know this had happened pulled back and shot
And the arrow snapped off about right here about right what that is and this part hit my hand right here
Luckily, I was pulling on the target. I still got a 10 on the target with the front half of the arrow
But this smacked me
It felt like I got hit with a hammer while I was laying on a piece of concrete
Hurt that bad, but I only had a few shreds of shards that went in and it didn't come out this side of the hand
But it hurt really bad
And that's why we tell you when you have an arrow that you think something happened you take and you do this if I had done
That it would have just snapped in two pieces and I would have known
But like I said, I didn't know this had happened back there. The guys hadn't mentioned that it fell
So that's why that happened and hit my hand
But it does hurt and it can't actually go all the way through your hand and it carbon hurts like heck when it goes into your
Skin into your muscle
So that's why you always want to check if a knock doesn't fit if it feels too loose on a string check it
Something's wrong. If you feel anything crunchy or it pops apart, obviously the arrows junk, but super serious to check it
Make sure your arrows are okay. Hopefully you guys found this video somewhat informative
And you come to realize how important it is to check your arrows
Either every shot or after every time that you hear an arrow get hit or slapped on a target
It doesn't take much for these things
there's so much energy energy in the bow these days that a little crack in one of these will have big consequences and
I know from from seeing it firsthand that it's it's something that nobody wants to have happen to him
Alright, so you guys like this video be sure to let us know down below in the comment section
I'd be curious to see if it's happened anybody if you've had an arrow blow up or if you've had
You know someone next to you had their arrow blow up or if you've actually caught it beforehand like I did
