Stanley’s long battle with depression left him feeling disconnected from family, friends, and work. For 35 years, he struggled in silence, retreating further into isolation during his darkest episodes. Eventually, Stanley realized he couldn’t face this alone and came to Union Rescue Mission in search of help.

At the Mission, Stanley began to rebuild his life step by step. He worked hard to earn his GED—a milestone that opened the door for him to enroll in community college, where he is now preparing for a career in nursing. With support from URM’s partnership with the Pepperdine Medical Clinic, Stanley also received the therapy he needed to navigate his mental health challenges and begin to heal.

Today, Stanley feels hopeful and prepared to re-enter society. For him, finding “the way home” meant reclaiming his education, receiving ongoing support for his mental health, and rediscovering his sense of purpose. He describes Union Rescue Mission as a life-saving place—where people from all walks of life can find compassion, resources, and the chance to begin again.
