Hello and welcome to my channel.
I have been teaching German for many years
and during this time I have put together a collection of typical mistakes
that many learners make again and again.
Today we will look at a few of these classics
and I will show you how to avoid them.
Let's go!
The first typical mistake is the wrong use of the verbs
anziehen and aufsetzen.
Many German learners say
Ich ziehe die Mütze an.
That sounds logical, but it is not correct.
When you put something on your head or face,
you use the verb aufsetzen.
The correct sentence is also
Ich setze die Mütze auf.
You can also put on a hat, a cap, a helmet,
a pair of glasses, a mask or a face mask.
The verb anziehen is wrong here,
because when you put on something,
you normally put body parts in it,
such as an arm in a sleeve
or a foot in a shoe.
This does not happen with a hat.
It just lies on top of the head.
The second mistake is the wrong use of the conjunctions
als and wenn in temporal clauses.
I have often heard a sentence like this, for example
When I was a child, I had a lot of stuffed animals.
This sentence is grammatically incorrect.
Why?
The conjunction als is used for
one-time events in the past.
And you are only a child once in your life.
That's why it's correct.
When I was a child, I had a lot of stuffed animals.
Another example.
When I was sick in the past,
my mother always made me camel tea.
Here the conjunction als is wrong,
because it is about a repeated action.
You can also see this in the word immer.
Words like immer, jedesmal, oft, häufig
are so-called signal words for repeated actions.
And for repeated situations,
whether in the past or present,
the conjunction wenn is used.
So the correct version is
When I was sick in the past,
my mother always made me camel tea.
The next common mistake is
the use of the article in vocabularies.
Some German learners say, for example
Ich bin die Lehrerin.
Or
Mein Bruder ist ein Arzt.
These sentences sound unusual for native speakers,
because in German you usually leave out the article
in vocabularies,
if you simply say
what profession someone practices.
So the correct version would be
Ich bin Lehrerin.
Mein Bruder ist Arzt.
Let's look at the next common mistakes.
Very often I hear sentences like
Ich bin nach Deutschland angekommen.
And
Herzlich willkommen nach Deutschland.
Unfortunately, these sentences are wrong.
Why?
The verb ankommen is used in German
not with the preposition nach,
but with the preposition in plus dative.
Nach is used with countries or cities
when you indicate a direction.
For example
Ich fahre nach Deutschland.
Or
Ich reise nach Deutschland.
But you're already there when you arrive.
That's why the place, country or city
is in the preposition in.
So it's correct
Ich bin in Deutschland angekommen.
Many learners also make the same mistake
The preposition in plus dative is used
because you say
jemanden an einem Ort willkommen
and not auf dem Wege dorthin.
So the correct version is
Willkommen in Deutschland.
The next mistake concerns the so-called n-declination.
Many German learners don't know this term
and therefore make mistakes
with certain masculine nouns in the singular.
Some masculine nouns that belong to the n-declination
are given in accusative, dative and genitive
an additional n or en.
That's why sentences like
Ich helfe dem Student.
Ich kenne diesen Mensch.
Fragen Sie bitte den Kollege.
are wrong.
The correct version is
Ich helfe dem Studenten.
Ich kenne diesen Menschen.
Fragen Sie bitte den Kollegen.
All nouns that belong to the n-declination
are masculine
and many of them end in e.
For example
der Kunde
der Junge
der Kollege
der Affe
der Hase
der Franzose
In addition, many vocabularies
that come from Greek or Latin
and also
For example
der Student
der Praktikant
der Polizist
der Journalist
der Biologe
Another typical mistake
is the use of the verbs
wissen and kennen.
Often you hear sentences like
Ich weiß Berlin.
Ich habe dort zehn Jahre gelebt.
Or
Ich weiß diesen Schriftsteller.
Ich habe seine Bücher gelesen.
These sentences are wrong
denn hier muss das Verb
kennen verwendet werden.
Richtig heißt es
Ich kenne Berlin.
Ich kenne diesen Schriftsteller.
Das Verb kennen benutzt man,
wenn man sagt,
dass man eine Person,
einen Ort
oder eine Sache
aus eigener Erfahrung kennt.
Danach steht immer ein Nomen,
kein ganzer Satz.
Das Verb wissen verwendet man,
wenn man über Fakten,
Tatsachen oder Informationen spricht.
Es wird oft mit Fragewörtern
wo, wann, warum,
wie lange, wie oft
oder mit Nebensätzen
Falsch sind zum Beispiel folgende Sätze
Ich kenne, dass die Prüfung morgen stattfindet.
Kennst du, wo der nächste Flughafen ist?
Und richtig sind Varianten
Ich weiß, dass die Prüfung morgen stattfindet.
Weißt du, wo der nächste Flughafen ist?
Das waren einige der typischen Fehler,
die viele Deutschlernende machen.
Fehler gehören zum Lernen dazu.
Wichtig ist nur, dass man daraus lernt.
