The three piano pieces D. 946 are solo pieces that Schubert composed in 1828, six months before his death. They were published by Brahms in 1868, but his name does not appear in the publication. These are neglected works compared to D. 899 and 935, and there is some doubt among scholars as to whether the pieces were composed as a set or merely compiled by Brahms. Although they are popularly known as impromptus, some musicologists refrain from calling them that because the construction of these pieces differs from other impromptus by the same composer. These pieces do not have much in common with sonata form, as they treat the inner sections and the presentation of themes differently.
