00:09 Today we are going to take a look at two phenomenal celebrations that you may not know about. They are World Freedom Day – the demolition of the Berlin Wall and World Kindness Day – a day to promote kindness and compassion worldwide.

00:44 First We Are Going To Take A Look At World Freedom Day!

00:49 At the end of World War II, Germany was divided into East and West Germany. West Germany was occupied by the Americans, the French, and the British. East Germany became the Soviet-occupied German Democratic Republic. And in 1949, East Germany became an independent country, and the city of Berlin became a part of Soviet-controlled Germany. The wall was created to prevent people from escaping from East Berlin to West Berlin. Even with the wall, from 1961 to 1989, around 5,000 people managed to escape over it. More than 100 people were killed trying to escape. In 1989, it became easier to travel in East Germany, which led to thousands of people climbing the wall and hitting it with chisels and hammers. The Berlin Wall was chipped away bit by bit and eventually was completely destroyed on 9 November 1989. One year later, Germany became a single territory again.

01:51 On November 9, World Freedom Day is celebrated. This is the amazing event in history when the Berlin Wall was abolished. For three decades, the wall had separated families and friends. It represented the fall of communism in Eastern Europe and the celebrations of democracy and freedom! The holiday was established by President George W. Bush in 2001 and became a federal observance.

02:17 Now Let's Take A Look At World Kindness Day!

02:23 World Kindness Day was introduced as an International Holiday in 1998 to promote kindness around the world. The official date to celebrate it is on November 13. Many countries observe this holiday now including the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, and the UAE, and Italy, along with other countries.

02:50 World Kindness Day started due to the observation of the World Kindness Movement. But in 2019, it was registered as an official Nonprofit organization under Swiss Law. The history of the group goes back to a Tokyo Japan convention in 1997. Many different institutions and associations based in many different countries had attended the conference due to their dedication to promoting kindness in society. The initial organizing of the World Kindness Movement began as a result of this gathering of nations. They pledged to make a written declaration to build a kinder and more compassionate world. In 1998, pursuing this goal, they launched the commencement of World Kindness Day.

03:39 This day is taking a look at the honorable deeds done in the communities and focusing on positivity and kindness which binds people together. All around the World on this day, there are concerts, dances, and kindness cards given out. World Kindness Day is not an official holiday as of yet, but the World Kindness Movement hopes that the United Nations will recognize it as such.
