Inside America’s Largest Home: A Tour of Biltmore Estate
Just as first envisioned, Biltmore is all about home—welcoming and celebrating family and friends, and extending the spirit of Biltmore beyond our 8,000 acres. It was true in 1895, and it remains true today.
Today, Biltmore House is a National Historic Landmark known as America’s Largest Home. Before it became one of North Carolina’s most popular tourist destinations, it was simply “home” to the Vanderbilt family.
The main residence, Biltmore House (or Biltmore Mansion), is a Châteauesque-style mansion built for George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States, at 178,926 sq ft (16,622.8 m2) of floor space and 135,280 sq ft (12,568 m2) of living area. Still owned by George Vanderbilt's descendants, it remains one of the most prominent examples of Gilded Age mansions.
