I am Samuel Chase, signer of the
Declaration, voice of the people, and
some said, fiery orator of Maryland. The
British taxed us without our say. I saw
firsthand how Parliament twisted power
into profit. Corruption had become the
art of British rule. I no longer held
the least hope in their wisdom or
virtue. I declared our only reliance
must be on God and ourselves.
So I led protests in Annapolis, rallied
tradesmen and farmers, and saw to it
that no paper was sold under that cursed
stamp act. When the call for
independence came, Maryland hesitated. I
rode to every county, stirred the hearts
of men, and returned with full authority
to cast our vote for liberty.
I signed the declaration, and years
later stood trial myself for speaking
too boldly as a judge. But I never
bowed, and I never will. Let that be
your inheritance.
