Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to
amateur repair time. Uh on the last
video, we worked on
this webcore royal
uh Regent
Coronet Realtore real tape player. This
thing is just awesome. I love it. Uh and
it's working pretty
[Music]
good. Um I can't play too much of it.
YouTube won't let me. Uh, but we didn't
do anything to it. We just brought it up
slow on a variac and it was working and
it actually sounds pretty good. You can
hear there's not a ton of hum on
it. I think we're hearing the motor.
We're not actually hearing hum. Um, and
it sounds decent for, you know, a kind
of lowfi
uh, realtore tape.
[Music]
Um, this thing's from 1961. I looked it
up a little bit, but it's tube operated.
So, I figured what we'd do is we'd take
it apart, work through it, replace some
capacitors, and try to make it, you
know, where we don't have to worry about
the thing blowing up. And then I'm going
to keep it as my realtore tape player.
This thing is just I think it's really
nice. Um, I love it. I've got the cover
for it as well. Only thing I'm missing
is I don't have the takeup reel. That's
actually just a one I took off something
else that uh obviously it's a little bit
too small for these bigger reels. Um so
I'll turn it around and uh figure out
how you take the thing apart. I may have
to do it through the front. I don't
know. I'll see how to get in it and we
can get back there to that amp um and
start working through that. I don't have
the schematics, but I might be able to
find them somewhere. So, um, and I, you
know, if it's clean enough inside, which
it probably is, we can probably just
look at the caps and look at the
resistors and measure that stuff right
there in in situ without the schematics
since the thing's actually working. So,
uh, let me see if I can figure out how
to get into it and we'll see what makes
this thing tick. All right, look at this
sexy beast here. Look at this
thing. To me, this is very well built.
If you didn't see the first video, we
were brag, they were bragging about it
in their manual. They were saying it was
the best one ever
made. Um, so let's see if I can identify
any of this
stuff. So, we've got a transformer here.
So, the power comes in
here. There is a
uh
a whenever you take the back panel off
uh there is a interlock switch. So,
basically, they've got a little jumper
on it. Whenever you take that back panel
off, it disconnects itself from the uh
chassis right here, actually. So, that
isn't actually where the AC goes in.
Just a little loop goes there to get the
power off the set. Um, so the power
comes in up
here and then where is it going into
this
transformer? It kind of sticks out the
front. All right. Well, we'll just start
here. These are jacks.
So, that says projector sync. There's a
there was this little projector setup
you could hook up to it. Um, here's
transformer, couple
fuses, some
diodes, old
school, what do they call
that? Everybody Everybody swears up now.
We got to replace Oh, we got to replace
it.
Oh, we got to replace it or it'll smell.
I'll be all right. I think we're going
to leave it. Um, selenium rectifier. I
think that's what that
is.
[Music]
Um, here's the motor. We noticed before
that this seems to
[Music]
um only turn on at a
[Music]
certain voltage. which we, you know, we
brought it up on the
variac and uh there was nothing till you
got to about 80 volts. Look how they
have
wrapped the wiring on the motor. Look at
that. I don't know if I've ever seen
anyone one done quite like that. And
again, this is a 1961 model.
It's got the white crap on
the You think I'll
live? I'm just kidding, folks. I don't
want to die from the from breathing that
or getting that stuff on me, but you
know, you some of this is going to
happen. Okay. Um, again, I don't have
any schematics. This is basically
the amp here. And then we have this down
here which I
guess that's the output trans
transformer to the
[Music]
speaker. Um schematics would be great,
wouldn't they? I'm sure I'm sure most of
you can tell just by looking at the
tubes what's going
on. Uh to me it looks like this is two
channels here.
Look at the old
school switches
here. Look at
that. Well, I really need to decide what
all am I going to replace on this.
the uh obviously the ceramics we don't
have
to I don't really have a great way of
testing them other than everything's
working right
now. That one's myar. We don't have to
mess with it.
Okay.
So, on this bottom
board, I mean, the thing sounds good. I
guess we could test the tubes, but
really, what am I supposed to replace
down here? I guess I could replace these
two
uh, you
know, cardboard caps. I don't even know
what kind those are. I've seen them
before and things,
but 300 working
voltage. 15
microfarad. Yeah, I'm thinking we test
the tubes and call it a day on that
board. Up here, we've got some that are
more obvious. Um, we got wax
caps that probably ought to go, but you
know, all of these disc caps are going
to be
fine. Do we worry about the diodes?
They're working. Um, and then we've got
the selenium
rectifier. We've got the electrolytics,
but there's no there's no
hum. And how many of have we got? That's
one there, isn't it?
Surely that's
one, but it's under something on the
front, so I don't really know what
that's
for. And then we've got this
one,
obviously. It's a 40, a 40, a 30, and a
30. And they're all at 450
volts. Yeah, I think we're just going to
do a partial
cap. I should have brought I've got like
a meter at the shop. I should have
brought that home so I
could test some of this stuff.
That could use a
little refreshing, couldn't
it? Even the pots aren't scratchy on
it. They just they just work how they're
supposed to work. So, I don't I don't
understand why this thing's in such good
shape. I've got to just attribute it to
the quality of Web Core. I'm not
familiar with webcore, but it seems like
this thing is really wellm
made. What are we looking here?
450
volt.
30
microfarad. It's positive on this
end, negative on that end. Now, what is
that? Is that like a motor run cap or
something?
What do you think? Should we get the
schematics or just wing
it? Okay. So, I'm going through
replacing a few of them. And um those
ones on the
bottom. 15300. Check this out. I've got
two negative
leads.
Wow. So, you know, they're probably
super high quality and but I'm going to
replace them with these. I've got some
Nichcon
22450s. Um, so we're going up a little
bit, but that's kind of what you know,
standard now. Um, here's the three
leads. One of them just isn't connected
to
anything. So, that's just how I guess
that was designed at the time.
What do you think? Which way does it
go? Believe that's it
there. Yeah. So, that one. Um, that's a
strange
cap. Got the light turned on so you can
see it a little better. All right. So, I
got those
in. Uh, everything seems good on
that. I'm not going to do the
electrolytics. I'm just going to leave
them. And then there are two that are
2.0200 volt. I may have those at work.
I'll see if I can bring those home and
do that. I took the fan off the back of
the
motor. And there's a felt washer in
there on that bushing that you can oil.
And it did seem to kind
of make it turn better after I oiled it.
I put some 20 weight 3 in1 oil on it.
Now, there's going to be something
similar up on the other side. I was
considering taking these off, but I
don't really know what's on the other
side. So, I think I'd rather try to go
through the front on that to see if I
can get to the other
bearing. I'm trying it's, you know, keep
in mind the thing's working, so I'm
trying not to do too much harm.
You know, some of you are already going
to think I'm crazy for changing any of
the caps, but I'm I plan on using this
and just keeping it. So, I don't I don't
you know, I'm trying to make it where
hopefully it's as reliable as
possible. All right. So, I think I'll
put the fan blade back on and then uh I
think maybe we'll test these tubes and
see if any of them are way out of spec.
If they're all pretty good, I'll just
leave them.
[Music]
Um, I don't I don't think that we
um I don't think we really need to do
too much screwing around with it
whenever the thing was working. It It
didn't sound great, but it, you know,
it's an old tape, you know. I don't The
tapes have been sitting around for 50
years, so I don't know how great really
I can expect it to sound. But if we find
a a U tube that's just way out of spec,
you know, we'll swap it just to make
sure that's not causing a
problem. All right, so we're going to do
our first 6B
Q5. She's good. Barely.
this this uh tester I'm going to have to
calibrate pretty soon because no matter
what I do it I never get one that just
pegs it unless it's a um a rectifier
which you know those usually do that. So
it is testing is good though. I'm hoping
we can just kind of keep all of these
tubes in here because they're all the
they're all the original web core tubes.
It's never had much done to it except
the caps that I just
replaced. Okay, so there are actually
two in this set. Let me grab the other
one. So, this is the second one. It
looks a little less tired than the other
one, but measures almost exactly the
same. Okay. And no shorts
detected. All right. On to the next one.
All right. So, we've got our first one
that we're going to
swap. The 12
AU7 is pretty weak. It's coming up at
like 60. And so I've got a whole box of
them. And this
one gives us a good 80. And you got to
test both
sides or both buttons, I guess. Um, so
that one's good. So maybe that'll help
us with our I think they use that as
like a preamp or something. I don't
know. Um, so maybe that'll help us with
our tone a little bit. So I'm going to
swap it in. And then there is another
one in the set. We'll check it too. and
I'll show you what it actually measures
so you can see u if we get any
improvement. All right, so this is the
second web core 12
AU7. It's
pretty that's about as borderline as you
can get, isn't
it? The B side of it's a little bit
better. Okay. Um so yeah, let me see if
I got a better one. The one that I
tested a second ago was an RCA. the RCA.
It's a 12
AU7A web
core. Both of
these aren't testing that great. So, let
me see if I can dig another RCA or
something out of here that test better.
Well, RCA does seem to hold up the best,
but it's about the best of I I can find
out of the other dozen or so I've tried
here.
Uh, I would call that 72 as if that I
don't know that that means anything on
this particular tester,
but that's what we're going to run with.
So, it'll be better than the one that
was in there for sure. One of the next
two. All right. The next one that sucks
is the 12
AX7 or one of the 12 AX7s. It just it
was, you know, in the right on the
borderline, but I've got one
here. Looking good. Not bad on one side.
I got to test the other side still. All
right. I don't even think that's new old
stock cuz look at the it's got wear on
the paint, but maybe. So, here's the
other side of
it. So, I don't know. I mean, it seems
to me like this meter actually works.
I've just got a ton of worn tubes that,
you know, just junk tubes.
Um, okay. So, I'm going to swap that in.
Um, and then we'll move on to the last
two that are also 12
AX7s. There's a little sibling rivalry
going on. So, this is the one
that sucked. Made in Great Britain. Now,
I'm not saying anything about England.
We love
England, but this particular one also
Webcore is made in the USA and it tests
better. So I just that's all I'm saying.
That's all that's it stops there. Not
saying anything past that. You you can
infer what you want. And I mean it's not
like it test great or anything. It's
just it's barely. Look at that. It's
borderline. Oh, look. It's going up.
American exceptionalism.
Okay. So, uh it sounds about the same
quality, which is probably the
limitation of the 50y old tape, you
know, at 3 and 1/2, 3 and a/4, 3 and
3/4. Um, but it has much more
volume. So, the uh the I don't know if I
chocked that up to the tubes or what,
but that we replaced or what. Um, but
yeah, it's it can go much louder than it
could before.
I mean, to the point that it'll go
really loud to the where you can't even
listen to it that loud. The whole thing
sounds um there's too much treble it
seems like. But
that's better.
Yes. So it it sounds better if you cut
the treble down, I think. Let's try the
other channel.
[Music]
I finally
play. So I take my guitar.
[Music]
So if you're hearing uh pieces missing,
it's because YouTube is uh cutting the
uh the audio out because they don't want
you to play copyrighted songs.
[Music]
Yeah, I think it sounds much better if
you cut the treble down. Let's turn it
back up and you can tell me what you
think. So that's with the bass and the
treble about the same.
[Music]
I don't know. It just Let's try it kind
of
mid. Let's go. Let's go mid.
Interesting.
Um, these tapes that I've got are
recorded in mono. I don't have any
stereo ones that I know of. It's kind of
hard to tell because you have to look
through them and just see what's on
them, you know. Um, if I put it in
stereo, it just plays two different
tracks. So, we can't do
[Music]
that. I think it sounds really pretty
good. Um, I'm happy with it. So, I got
two things left. I want to oil the front
of the motor. I did the back. I want to
do the front. And I want to see if I can
figure out what's going on with the uh
the timer isn't working. You can reset
it, but it
just so screwed up. And you know that it
kind of helps you on a reel to reel.
[Music]
I have no clue what song that is. Okay,
let's try the other channel again.
Come on, give us a good one. Come on,
give us a good one.
[Music]
Did they record that part at a different
speed? Almost sounds like it, doesn't
[Music]
it? See
No, they didn't. It was just a crappy
recording.
What's next?
[Music]
We hit We hit pay dirt here, people.
Let's uh let's give him a little more
treble so we can hear that good voice.
[Music]
Uh Ronnie Milsap played piano on this
and he said that in the studio Elvis was
telling him
uh that he wanted he said something like
put give me a little more thunder with
that left hand Ronnie. You know my
name's Ronnie so and so uh the
on the left hand was Elvis's idea.
Apparently,
that part right there
[Music]
Yeah, they're probably going to delete
all
that. Okay, so uh yeah, I still want to
oil this and I want to uh check this
out. Okay, so I took the cover off the
front came off pretty easy. So, a few
things. There is a hidden adjustment.
I don't know what. Maybe there some kind
of bias adjustment or something, but
that's under the cover and you can't get
to it unless you take the cover off and
it's not marked or anything. So, that's
one thing. Another thing, the two knobs,
one of them is the reverse and fast
forward and the other one is the play
and record. These are the nicest knobs
I've ever seen on anything.
They're cast or I mean it may just be I
don't know what kind of metal,
but they're cast. And I mean this is
this is nicer than anything I've ever
seen on like an oven or something. Just
really heavy nice
um knobs. Also, I I figured out where I
got this thing. I looked it up. Um, I go
to these uh estate auctions from time to
time and I bought this in Lake Wy, South
Carolina. There was a guy, there was a
woman who was relocating, which means
she's old enough that she's going into
like a retirement home probably. Um, or
maybe just downsizing, but apparently
her husband had a whole bunch of
collectible stuff and there was this
awesome auction where they had just tons
of cool stuff and I got this at that
auction. I don't remember what I paid
for it, but it would have been like $10.
Um, okay. Okay. So, that's that. Now,
the
the this reel is working just fine like
this to reset. And if I turn this worm
gear
here, if you go one
way, obviously that's backwards. Um, if
you watch, so it works fine if that gear
is turning. But whatever turns that gear
must not be turning it. So, let me
figure see if I can look at the back of
it and see what that is. All right, I
see it. There is a
pulley and there is a pulley up
here and there is a belt. I can't tell
if it's broke or if it just popped off.
Feels like it just popped off. Yeah, I
think I can just reroute that back and
that should get
it. All right. Um, I was able to get it
back on there very easily and it's in
nice shape. It
feels just fine. Oh, and by the way, I
was able to get the I don't know if I
showed it earlier, but I was able to get
the
2.2 microfarad capacitors and replace
them. Okay, so that's that. So, I'm
going to take off that other cover on
the front to see if I can get to the
other side of this motor so I can oil
it. I've oiled this bearing. I want to
oil the other one. Well, folks, it's
viewer mail
time. If you want to mail us something,
this is our address at the store.
Joe's Classic Video Games 139 Caldwell

This is from our buddy
Dennis. He
uh he sent me this. I have no clue what
it is. I think he wanted me to open it
on camera so he could get my wild
expression. So, let me cut it open and
we'll see it together. All right. All
right. Now, I don't know if he's one of
these guys that does like double,
triple, quadruple wrapper
stuff. Little bubble
wrap. What have we
here? I can't tell what it is
yet. Watch makaker's hammer with six
interchangeable heads. That's pretty
cool. for watch repair and other hobby
projects. Six screw on tips include
brass flat, steel ball, steel dome,
steel flat, steel wedge, and poly
plastic
flat. Uh-huh. Well, thank you, Dennis. I
can absolutely use
that. Yeah. You uh whenever you're
working on clocks and watches and stuff,
a lot of times you got little tiny
things you need to push together or
press together, and you need a little
mallet like that. Nothing
big. But wait, there's more.
Watch case opener. Adjust easily to open
most screwback type cases. Nurled handle
for secure grip. Aust adjustable thumb
wheel. Uh-huh. Very cool. I have one of
these, but mine only has two jaws, so
it's kind of hard to use because
you you know it slips. So these I've
seen these ones with three. That ought
to be better, you know. So, thank you.
Thank you, Dennis. I appreciate that.
Wait, there's
more. Watch spring bar tool set. Avoid
expensive watch repair costs by fixing
your own watch bands. Now, you know, you
can't ever have too many of these
little spring bars. I've got some, but I
don't actually have the
tool. 101 steel spring bars with an
aluminum removal tool and a clear
polystyrene case. removal tool
dimensions, blah blah blah. That's
pretty cool, too. I can definitely use
that. Like I said, I don't even have the
tool. I've just been messing around with
a uh like a little the end of a the
point of a
screwdriver. Thank you, Dennis. I
appreciate it. Wait a minute. There is
more. Pittsburgh test probe set used for
circuit
probing, remove
O-rings, retrieving washers, and final
fine detail work. I thought it was going
to say fine dental work cuz you know a
lot of times they call these dental
pickicss or whatever. Well, that's cool.
Yeah, you can use these too. I don't And
again, I don't have a set of these at
the house. I do have these at work, but
I don't have these at the house. So,
very cool. Well, thank you, Dennis. I
appreciate that. I like when people
think of me and they send me something I
can use in my repairs. So, very cool.
Yeah. So, if you've got anything uh a
letter or anything, you don't have to
send us anything, folks. I'm not asking
you to send us anything. And certainly
don't if you can't afford to if if if
you're not rich, if you're filthy rich,
you can send us something if you want,
but um if you'd like to send us a letter
or correspondence or something, uh we
had somebody the other day it looks like
sent us uh some magazines. I'll do a
I'll show that in a video. But uh if you
want to send us a letter or get a hold
of us, that's our address. So back to
our realtore tape
recorder. Okay, folks. So, I got it all
back together. Everything's cool. Um, I
went and got some of my tapes. I've got
probably 40 or 50 tapes that I've picked
up in various places over the years. And
my favorite ones are ones that are
obviously somebody re-recorded
themselves because like I was just
saying, it makes like a it's like a
historical thing like why did they think
this was important to record. So, we got
two here that are it looks like kind of
serious, but we'll just play them for a
minute. So, somebody has written on this
funeral of
E. It almost looks like it says
Esi. I don't
know. So, we're going to play it and
just see. I It would be interesting if
it's a like a local church tape of a
funeral of someone that you and I don't
know. You know, that might be kind of
cool just to see what they say. I don't
want to listen to the whole thing, but
um here on tape, but it' just be
interesting to see what it is. So, let's
see if we can get it to start up. I've
got it plugged straight into the wall
power now.
Um, let the tube warm up a little bit.
The meter went all the way
up.
Um, and I don't know what speed it is
and I don't know if it's stereo or not.
We are
on channel
one. So, let's just see what we got.
I still got it on three and a half,
three and 3/4, whatever it
[Music]
[Laughter]
[Music]
is. It's backwards, isn't it?
They didn't rewind the tape or I've got
it on. I can't reverse
it. I don't have another tape to wind it
on. Oh man. To me, like that's a
Franklin, but I may just be generalizing
there. Let's try fast forwarding it a
bit. I think we're right. I think the
speed's
right. Counter is working.
It could be that this was a famous
funeral.
Okay. Yep. So I actually u I wasn't
generalizing. That is Artha.
[Music]
Okay. So that's the left channel and
I've got it set on stereo.
Okay. Yeah. So it is actually
Okay. So it's it's a monotape.
[Music]
So um
I hate to try to turn the thing
over. You know, you can stop it and
remove the reels and reverse
them and it'll do it. I guess I could do
that if you had a
um
H well, we'd be at the end of the tape
no matter what. So, even if I had a a
one that will play in reverse, you'd
still have to fast forward it to re to
play it because
it's it's at the end of the
tape. So, we'll wind a little bit on it.
You kind of sounded like there was
somebody talking on the other side, but
in
the the rewind
version, let's check in and see who's
talking or speaking with us now. Oh, and
we, you know, we just confirmed that it
was at three and a half, three and 3/4
because u that song was playing the
right speed. I mean,
obviously, you got to I mean, you you
can obviously tell if it's the wrong
speed because it'll be so far off. It's
not like they're close.
[Music]
I think that might be Chicago. Give it a
little more treble.
[Music]
So, here on YouTube, they won't let me
play u complete songs more than six or
seven seconds, they tell you. So, if
there's parts of this that are just
choppy and things disappear, it's
because YouTube made me cut it out.
[Music]
[Music]
Okay. So, I'm going to carefully remove
the tape and reverse it so that we can
play the other side and see if it really
is a funeral. All right. I reversed it,
but now that I think about it, I don't
know that that's going to work. I think
what's going to happen is since it's a
[Music]
mono, I guess it depends on if it's a
two track. If it's a two
track, see it would it would so one,
two, three, four. If it would record on
track one all the way through and then
you turn it over at the end and that
records on
track two or track three or track four.
So this may be just um um the correct
speed again. I mean the correct
um direction
again. We're on the same channel. I
didn't
[Music]
That does sound like a funeral.
[Music]
Great. It won't let us like cue through.
You have to
stop to fast forward.
[Music]
That's so cool. They, you know, they at
their church, they had a a real toreal
tape deck. I mean, it could have been
one just like this with a with a
microphone setup or had it patched into
their PA system or something and could
record anything.
[Music]
So, they've got a funeral going on, but
they don't have any instruments. So,
they're just singing, but you know,
And forever.
and will

[Music]
It would be cool to hear him say
something, you
know. Yeah, that might have been the
end.
What happens if I switch the the other
track? Nothing. This part of the tape
has
nothing. Okay. Um, let's try
rewinding big time. Now, this thing
rewinds fast. You got to watch it or
it'll run off the reel. Let's fill the
reel
up. See if we can get back before that.
the uh singing number
there. They didn't write anything on the
back, but ain't that the way that these
things
go? When I had cassette tapes, I didn't
ever write nothing on them either. And
then I had CDs and I never wrote nothing
on them either.
How far will he go? How brave am
I? Just a little bit more. You don't
think it would break the tape, do you?
Like if it ran over the edge, it'
probably break the tape, wouldn't
it? Is that bad? That sounds bad. Is
that bad? You old-timers, is that bad?
Just kidding about the old-timer thing.
I know you're not old-timers.
[Laughter]
[Music]
Let's try the
other channel. one and had a big church
all night life and came down to take off
down there
live couldn't trust people
live no flection but bishops have places
God never have places Uhhuh.
but you can get in the habit and it's
hard to get out of it. Mhm. Yep. And it
runs the whole
church. Not an elder happen to be
a
church. Everything works
on every position in the church,
general,
local or otherwise, works on the
shoulders right
now. all at
once. There's trouble in the local
church come
down in the general church and the
bishops over having something he want
done. He comes
on pastor district.
So you see here he's a training
[Music]
wheel and uh it's never been a close
look and close
understanding of this position.
master and be because I saw it as a
heavy responsib You
[Music]
think I must take under
consideration brother Salone and his
family regardless of how brother Salone
treats
me. Talk back
to you know some people say well Salone
is a devil the devil but I'm going to
give him all the hell I can get. Listen
but can't do
that man's family got to live like
everybody else. You just look
out. S Creek is the church and the
members is looking to the land to give
them a leader. Listen, that's
worthwhile.
Don't just give us anybody else.
Am I right?
If anybody come, they hold, but I never
respons you know us better. You know us
better. Won't you say that? You You
should treat us better.
See, well, I have a hard way to
go. The bishop was hooked right. Well,
you know, I didn't know about the
church. This is one of my problems this
morning. The man come by, he
knows him.
[Laughter]
This is This is But anytime a bull get
lose your husband when he's up kind of
like kind of sounded like he said
something
about somebody didn't the gentleman that
passed away didn't like one of the other
members of the church but was good to
him anyway. I think it's what he
said. And then he said something about
you can have a an a habit that's hard to
break and it'll ruin the
church
building. And he had a desire to build
up the ruin walls of Jerusalem. Amen.
And he wanted to go back. But he did
this great things in this great house
and didn't know how he going to get out
of it.
And if you know us, we've been ready to
tell a lie. Pray
with frame up something, you know. But
he just it's kind of just
sad. So Kane said, "Well, now what is
your
request? What is your request?"
[Music]
Well, he said, "I'd like to do
something."
There was a there was a guy that used to
come to the flea market years ago. I
used to set up at the flea market long
time ago with Joey. And um this is
something our family did way back in the
day. And um there was this guy that used
to come around all the time. And I don't
know, I don't even know the guy's
name, but I think I still have the
recordings. But the guy used to come
around all the time and I was messing
with not one of these, but I was messing
with a CD player or something one day,
something. And the guy came by and it
was an old older gentleman and he said,
"Hey, do you uh can you take a tape and
uh put it on a CD?" And I said, "Yeah, I
can do that." And he's like, "I've got
some tapes and I I want to I want to
make a copy of them on CD so that I can
uh give them to somebody." And I said,
"Okay." So he brought them to me and
he's like, "Yeah, this is something I
like to do in my spare time. They were
tapes of this guy playing the keyboard
and he was just playing these
like it was just like
a he just had the keyboard set up like
an organ almost and it was just
[Music]
going and he might have like some little
a little drum thing going on in the
background and he was he was just
preaching over it like this guy's doing
and it was just kind of free flowing.
and he and um he'd get into some rants
and stuff and it was it was pretty cool
and it was just some old man with his
keyboard, you know, and uh so I made I
recorded him on the computer and made
him into a CD for him and uh he came up
there for a little bit longer and then I
didn't see him anymore and uh he was
pretty old so it's something you know he
may have gotten sick but
um yeah it kind of reminds me of that.
So, you know, this is stuff that's
important to people. Like, somebody knew
this gentleman and made a recording of
his uh of his funeral, and they probably
had a lot of good memories of the guy,
and so they thought that it was
important. All right, so I got one more
here. I'm going to fast forward this
wraps back up how it was. I got one more
here that I want to play for you. Okay,
so now this this particular one, I don't
really know what's going on. Um, it has
a light side to the
film, which is what's up right now, and
it has
a a dark side of the
film, which is what's down right now.
So, I don't know if it's only
one-sided and it's only got a recording
on one side and I'm playing the back of
it and there's no recording. I don't
know if those
existed. All right. So, it's in a scotch
box and it says recording both
directions. And it says scotch on the
reel, but it also says side
two. So, I think it may be the same
thing. Maybe we're at the end of
side one in the beginning of side two.
And so we we can't hear
anything because it ended before then.
If the thing really will record for 12
hours depending on the speed that you're
running
at.
Um
yeah, how long is it? It
says this is a 12,200 ft
reel. So it will record for 1 hour, 2
hours, or 4 hours depending on the
speed. All right. So I'm going to do the
same trick. I'm going to fast forward it
and then we'll flip the the reel and see
if that does anything. But I think no
matter what I do, it'll only play that
one
side. Yeah, I can't I can't get the
other side. But could you
ever The damn thing might be I might
have to get creative with the reels
here. Huh? Would I be the first? See,
it's spinning that
way. So, this is taking it up. If I was
to reverse
it to where it was coming off
here, that wouldn't
[Music]
work. They may have. This may be the
takeup reel.
And the whole thing's on there upside
down. Yeah, that's how that would work,
isn't it? It would never be upside down.
You can't I'm playing the I'm trying to
play the back of the tape, I think, cuz
you No matter how you do it, when you
reverse the reels, it's still going to
play the same the same side of the tape.
It's just it's changing the track. So,
if it's four tracks, it's recording on
one and three the first time, and then
whenever you reverse it, it's recording
on one and three, which is actually two
and four, but it's on the
same It's on the same side of the tape.
I think they've got the tape wound
backwards. How did they do that, though?
How would they wind it
backwards? Maybe it's just at the end of
the tape. I don't know. I'll fast
forward it, but I don't have a big
enough takeup reel, unfortunately. But
I'll fast forward a little while like we
did the other one. All right. It does
seem like it's on there backwards.
Um, but I have put a loop in
it. We'll see how that
goes. You can see where I'm rewinding
it. It doesn't line up the same.
So, I guess it's probably cuz it's
pulling it to one side instead of the
other side. But it it does seem like
we've got audio on that other
side. Yeah, that ain't the best. But
okay, I think it just fixed
itself. Let me see if I can rig it up.
[Music]
All right. Well, this is pretty
unfortunate. Um, it
appears. So, I've got it where the black
side is now facing up. So, it's trying
to play that instead of the lighter
side. Um, I think when I rewound it, it
re it flipped it right there. So, that's
why it looks different is because you're
just looking at the other side of the
tape. So, it's a different color, I
think, or there's a kink or something.
Um, so I am getting audio, but it's
backwards. And if I switch to the other
channel, there's no audio. So
it's everything's just in the wrong
direction. So it sounds very strange and
I would make jokes, but it's nothing to
joke about, unfortunately. So this is
the little note that's inside of it.
So, I'd like to figure out a way to get
it where
it's I need another fulls size takeup
reel because then I
could run it all the way
through the other way and then simply
put a little twist in it so that it goes
back through and will wrap up properly
um on the other reel. So, I I just need
to get some more of these reels that are
full size that don't have any tape on
them. But that's that, folks. And I'm
I'm not trying to be cute with that. I
mean, I'm I didn't make it do that. It's
just that's how I was doing it. All
right. So, there you go, folks. But, uh,
interesting. Yeah. Um, sometimes at
these estate sales, you find really cool
stuff. Just stuff that people wanted to
keep a record of or or whatever. So, I
changed out the
caps. Um, got it sounded pretty good
with the exception of this. Um, and I'm
going to I'm going to keep this one as
my personal realtore player. I think
that's a really nice one. So, enough of
that. I will I guess I'm going to fast
forward it to find that kink in it and
then rewind it again the right way where
I can leave it and uh till I get another
big takeup reel so I can rewind it back
the other way and play it. Maybe I'll do
that on a on a separate video later. I
could put it I may put it on our
Patreon. If you uh if you don't know, we
have a Patreon channel now where we
upload things that YouTube like music
that YouTube won't let us upload. We've
got arcade repair tips that we've called
out of our other videos and there's some
unreleased clips and things like that on
there. So, if you're interested in that
kind of stuff, the link to Patreon is
down below. But we will see you back
here next week uh where we'll do a clock
or a radio or something cool. You never
know what's going to happen here at
amateur repair time. Now, if you didn't
see it before, I did a the first
Realtore tape player that I did uh was
this one, and it actually caught on fire
while I was working on it. So, check it
out. I'll see you on the next video.
