It’s been over 26 years since the STS-88 mission in December 1998, the first flight of the Space Shuttle Endeavour involved in assembling the International Space Station. During this mission, Endeavour carried the Unity module (Node 1) into orbit and connected it with the Zarya module, which had been launched earlier in November 1998 by the Russian Proton-K rocket.
Zarya wasn’t just an ordinary module, it was the first one made by Russia for the ISS and played a crucial role in powering the station and controlling its orbit. And so, the STS-88 mission became the official starting point for building one of humanity’s greatest space projects.

By 2011, after the final 16 modules were assembled, the ISS became a symbol of global cooperation, a shared home for five space agencies from 15 countries. Together, they built, operated, researched, and exchanged technology, all with the goal of exploring space. Remarkably, this partnership remains strong, with the ISS quietly orbiting Earth for over 25 years, symbolizing what global cooperation can achieve despite challenges and change.
However, as difficult as it is to accept, this long-term partnership will soon come to an end, with NASA planning to retire the ISS within the next five years.
