Magnus Midtbø meets the man with possibly the biggest hands on Earth—and puts his grip strength to the ultimate test. From crushing grip challenges to arm wrestling surprises, this video explores raw hand power like never before. Can Magnus keep up? Watch now to find out!
Not only does this man have the biggest hands in the world,
they're also some of the strongest.
Jesus!
This is Jeff Day, a true phenomenon in the arm wrestling world.
With one of the best left arms in the game,
Jeff has been a world-class arm wrestler for decades.
Today, I'm joining him for a glimpse into his life
to see the unique challenges of living with his massive hands.
Is this the biggest wedding ring ever made?
As well as his everyday work on the farm.
Oh, and I even got to test his real strength.
Jeff.
Magnus.
Nice to meet you.
Oh my god.
Welcome to Minnesota.
Thank you.
Oh my god.
Those are some beefy hands.
Yes.
Can I just compare...
Just my hands compared to his hands.
Look at that.
That is crazy.
Have you ever done any grip strength stuff as well?
No.
Do you know how strong you are in that stuff?
No, because a lot of the stuff I try,
my hands don't fit in them right.
I also tried some of those bigger...
What's that one?
The Thomas?
The Thomas Inch dumbbell, yeah, yeah.
On each hand.
Yeah.
I couldn't get my hand down in between.
So I had to try just a couple tips.
I can move it around, but I can't get a whole hand on it.
So that makes it challenging.
A lot of the stuff is designed for smaller hands.
So you have some arm wrestling stuff inside.
This is where you train, right?
Yes, I have cables and stuff in the barn.
Yeah, I'm excited to try to arm wrestle you.
It's going to be fun.
I know, I've seen some of the stuff you've done.
You've got a lot of strength.
Well, maybe, I don't know.
Let's go inside and find out.
I want to try to arm wrestle you to feel how it's...
How you feel.
Yeah, on this one?
Sure.
So where's the most dangerous place you've ever climbed?
Maybe in Red Rocks with Alex Honnold.
You know, the Guy from Peace solo.
The one you did was, you thought was more extreme.
You said this one's gonna be more mild.
It was still pretty...
Pretty much straight up.
Yeah, it was not so mild.
It will be interesting to see how your climbing is with your hands.
Because most of the indoor climbing holds are made for normal-sized hands.
But I think with your massive hands, on some pinches and stuff,
I can see you being able to hold some holds that no other people can hold.
Let's see how you're...
Jesus.
And then, yeah.
Oh, God.
He's just playing.
I know you're strong.
I've seen you.
You did some weights too with The Beast, Eddie Hall.
Eddie Hall, yeah, yeah.
I've seen you doing a lot of the weights he was doing.
He couldn't believe it.
Oh, Jesus.
It's like you're not even moving.
Okay, let's try this machine.
Is that good?
The range of motion?
Or should I do more?
Then I also have this one.
That'll hook up.
So that puts a lot more pressure on the wrist and the hand.
You have some massive wrists.
Have you ever worn a watch?
No.
Want to try?
Look at that.
Wow, that's crazy.
Has it...
Is there any other challenges for you?
Having such big hands?
Like in everyday life?
Yeah, otherwise everything...
I mean, I grew up with it.
So I've never let it stop me.
I work on cars.
Yeah, of course.
I can do all my own mechanical stuff.
Do people usually stare at you when you're out doing stuff?
Yeah.
But I guess in this area, you're a celebrity, right?
People know who you are.
Yeah.
So it's not a big deal.
But when you travel and stuff...
Yeah, around here, everyone just knows who I am.
But is it nice that people come up to you?
Do you feel like people are staring?
Is it good or bad?
I'd rather have them come talk to your ass and just stare and assume or whatever.
So how was it growing up in a small place like this?
Nice.
I liked it.
Yeah.
Your childhood was nice.
You didn't have any bullying or anything with...
No, not in the neighborhood.
I had a couple.
When I was in school, I had a couple.
And when did your hands start to grow?
I was born that way.
Really?
From when you were born?
Yeah.
My hands...
My left is a little bit bigger.
It was noticeable right away.
Yeah.
Do you...
Have you been diagnosed?
Do you have a condition or is it...
Back then, I went to...
When I got a little older, I went to the doctors in Rochester.
There's like 50 doctors there.
I was tested for gigantism and albinitis and I didn't have them.
But are your hands still growing?
No.
No, they stopped growing.
The only time they grow is when I gain weight.
Okay.
When I get heavier and, you know, I lose weight, they get a little smaller.
Just like, you know, like you, if you got heavier, your hands get a little bigger.
Yeah.
A lot of people, when they gain weight, it's the belly.
But for you, it's the hands.
Yeah.
I get up my upper body and arms.
That's kind of cool.
Yeah.
So this is some of the other farm chores is splitting wood.
And that's what keeps you strong?
Yeah.
I mean, it's a little of everything because you're doing your whole...
It's a whole body workout.
It's not just arms.
I'll grab them all.
Do you...
Can you train with that?
I've seen you do this thing where you...
Pull it out.
Yeah.
I might break my nose if I try that.
Oh God.
And you held it all the way down here too.
You can do it to the sides if you're afraid of it.
Yeah.
That's a good exercise.
Wow.
And this is also functional training, right?
Because you need this to heat the house.
Do you want to try the other half?
The other...
Like this?
Yeah.
Have you done much of it or no?
Uh, not really.
No.
All right.
I'll try again.
All right.
The key is...
So you got the right stance, right distance.
Nice one.
There we go.
And then another half.
Yeah.
Got it?
No, I'm not able to lift it.
Can you?
Thank you.
There you go.
Okay.
Nice.
Now you have some wood to keep you warm.
Yes.
Throughout the day.
Especially if you do a lot of it, you know, you stay warm outside.
I'd rather be outside than in the gym.
I bought a ring.
Is this your ring?
That's my wedding ring.
What the hell?
Look at that.
I can put two fingers in.
And almost three.
Is this the biggest wedding ring ever made, you think?
Uh-huh.
As far as I know.
When did you realize that you were good at arm wrestling?
I used to do it with a neighbor guy every now and then when I was younger.
Then I got started in arm wrestling my senior year of high school,
because I wrestled for high school.
Okay.
Were you good at wrestling?
Yeah, I didn't do too bad.
Our coach took us over to a benefit or charity that was in town.
And so they have a bunch of different things going.
And there's people there with arm wrestling table
that were running all the little groups around town at the different bars.
I beat all the kids and I beat all the adults.
So I liked it because it was just like wrestling that one-on-one competition, you know.
So I got hooked right away.
How about Devin Larratt?
Have you fought him yet?
I've never pulled him up on a table.
We did grip up once after I did a supermatch and the tournament.
Then we pulled up.
I could pull him over, but I couldn't finish him.
But I had just got done doing like 25 matches.
Do you think you could have?
Back then?
I think so, first.
They've been close.
Do you think he was avoiding you?
I think so, because I asked him.
He said at some time he would.
But now, last time I was up in Toronto last year,
wanting to go.
I'm not back to 100% yet.
But maybe one day.
All right, have you seen one of those before?
Yes, I have.
But the question is, are you even able to fit your fingers through?
Yes, I can get these three.
Okay, so there's gonna be a three-finger for you.
Yeah, see my fingers are already half closed.
Yeah, that's true.
Yeah, so it's like a weird angle for you.
Yeah, that's good.
80 with three fingers only.
You know, if my hand was more out, where I get...
Yeah.
Because your hand's stronger open a little bit more.
Yeah, because it's like if I was going to grip something really small,
you don't...
There's no pressure on it, I think.
Yeah, no, I get it.
But also your foot, right?
Because you have one foot that's bigger than the other.
Yes.
Wow, that's...
Compare it to mine.
What's the size of that?
17.
And this one's 11.
So you have to buy two pairs of shoes every time you go shopping.
Have you ever done any climbing?
No, I've done climbing construction stuff.
When I was younger, I mean, I graduated high school with 180 pounds.
All off the body strength.
I had a 400-pound branch.
When they had the ropes in the gym, I could do the rings.
You could do iron cross?
Oh, wow.
That is very impressive.
And also you said how much in bench?
400?
400 pounds.
Oh, so you were very athletic then.
Yeah.
And a lot of different things.
These are all your trophies.
Yes.
That's really cool.
You even got a belt?
Yes.
But that's... It's all for arm wrestling, right?
Yes.
Do you do any of the training down here?
Yes, I do this one here with the country crash handle.
That's a pretty high weight.
Oh, God.
No chance of... You made that seem so easy.
Oh, there are more trophies even.
Yes, those are older ones.
But this is part of your workout, right?
Yes, there's like 200 barrels up here.
And you throw it down to give it to the horses or what?
Yes.
Is there any techniques to this?
Just grab by the strings, usually.
Use the strings? They're solid?
Yep.
And then just throw them down?
Yep.
Just don't go out the door with them.
Yeah, there you go.
Magnus the farmer, huh?
There you go.
Like I said, I do... My trailer does 120 at a time.
120 at a time?
Yeah.
So I go up and load them all in the trailer and then come home.
All right.
Feed them all up and come up.
So you handle them three times before by the time you're done.
Yeah.
So it is cool what they say.
Farmers are strong.
They're 50, 60 pounds, you know, barrels.
Some are a little heavier and some are a little lighter.
Like I said, it's a full-body work because you're picking them up, you're twisting, moving.
So do you come to this place often?
We used to come here.
Like I said, when I worked, I used to come here every now and then for breakfast with my boss.
Yeah.
Do you always order the same thing?
Usually pretty close.
It seemed like you didn't have to look at the menu.
Do you have kids, right?
Three?
Yeah.
Three kids.
Do they have big hands?
No.
No one else in my family does.
Huh.
My parents.
My grandpa had big hands, but he was a bigger guy.
Right.
So no one really knows how you got your big hands?
Nope.
Huh.
Not even doctors?
No, they're not sure either.
Do you think there are any other sports that you would be good at that you haven't tried?
I don't know.
I never.
Yeah.
How about boxing?
I mean, getting punched by you must be a nightmare.
I don't know if I could find-
You have so much weight.
I don't know if I could find the gloves.
You have that, or have you seen those slapping competitions?
Yeah.
Those look horrible.
I would never do that, but-
Do you know who the guy that runs it?
Dana White.
Is he?
Is that the guy who runs it?
Yeah.
A couple years ago, he reached out to me about doing it.
Oh, really?
Then he paid for me to come down and pay, because you have to see a doctor before you can do it.
Dana White sent you a message asking you to come out to do the slapping competitions.
Wow.
That's cool.
And so I went 59, and I said, no, I'm too old.
Someone can slap away from losing my memories.
Right.
I didn't think you were that old.
No, that's too old.
It's interesting.
So you said you used to be pretty strong in bench press, right?
You're still strong, do you think?
I think so.
I mean, I'm quite very strong.
I don't know.
Depends on how my right elbow would do.
Because after this, we're going to the gym, and it would be nice to see how your bench press is.
I think your curls, too, should be very strong.
Not sure.
We'll see.
Yeah, we'll see.
When was the last time you bench pressed?
Two years out of high school.
Really?
No kidding.
Really?
Wow.
And then you bench pressed 400.
How can you just stop bench pressing overnight when you still get it at it?
Oh, well, like I said, I was doing it, but then I started breaking the blood vessels in my arm.
Okay.
Up in here.
Yeah.
So he just said to stay lightweight and reps.
Look at those arms, though.
Jesus Christ.
I have big forearms, and compared to you, they're like nothing.
I guess your mobility has gotten worse from the arm wrestling, right?
Yeah.
It's like you don't have the same...
Because straightening...
Can you straighten your arms out?
That's as far as it goes.
Should we put on some weight then?
Sure.
Okay, 134.
Yeah, that feels okay.
Why are you smiling, Jeff?
Because I'm nervous.
You're nervous, yeah.
I won't be able to do it.
You haven't done it in like, what, 30 or 40 years?
40 years, probably.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
I don't feel any...
My left has no issues.
My right might have a little issue as we get in here.
Yeah?
So maybe we should put on like uneven weight.
Put on another 45 plates on each side.
Try it.
Yeah.
It's so heavy, though.
Nope, on the right side.
But I mean, that's strong for not having done that in a long time.
You almost got 100 kilos.
You haven't done it in like 40 years.
And there's no carryover from arm wrestling either.
Because arm wrestling is all this way.
We'll be interested to see what you can do in hammer curls, though.
You know, like just this?
Yeah.
What do you got here?
This is 25 on each.
This will feel good for you.
Yeah, that's baby weight.
My hand is stuck in there.
I can do that one, right?
Yeah, let's try to move up a bit then.
All the gym bros are going to comment on my form.
Nothing's ever right.
Yeah, I know.
Easy.
The right is a little bit more difficult.
Yes.
Yeah.
Nope, I can't do it.
Yeah, that's like I said, messed it up so many times.
So this one, Jeff, I think is made for you.
Lifting this like that.
OK.
That was 20 pounds.
How much do you think you can do?
I don't know.
Depends on how big you jump and size wise.
Go up to 30.
That is going to be my max.
Easy.
OK.
How much bigger do you think you can go?
Let's go up one.
35.
Oh, so easy.
OK, now we have to go up another one.
It's getting close to my limit.
I don't think my fingers can even reach this one.
No, they can't.
Barely.
You see this?
No.
No, no chance.
The way you're holding that is just crazy.
You got it, man.
I think what you need is some chalk.
This chalk bag has never looked smaller.
All right, moving it.
Oh, yeah, yeah, nice.
Yeah, you got it.
Good job, good job.
OK, this wall weighs 6.6 pounds.
Do you think you'll be able to lift it?
I'm going to try first, OK?
There's no chance.
Maybe you could try to lift it more straight.
Oh, yeah, he's picking it up like it's a toy.
No chance.
Yeah, there's some advantages of having big hands.
I'm very curious to see what you're going to do on the climbing wall.
If you guys want to see Jeff climbing, please comment below.
Thank you guys so much for watching, and I will see you next time.
