In Judaism and Christianity, children are taught to honor their mother and father. This is very different from the current liberal educational system in America, where schools often advise children not to listen to their parents or even inform them about struggles with gender identity. Marissa and Yoram Hazony discuss the danger of shifting toward a neo-Marxist society, where parents don’t have the right to teach their children—only the “experts” do.
My background, I was a former educator, and now I'm on the other side of it where I'm a mother,
and I can't tell you how many times I've heard teachers say to me, you know what, Marissa,
please just bathe your kids, pick them up from school, feed them, bring them to school the
following day. You know, in many schools, they don't even assign homework anymore because they
say that all the schoolwork, all the education of a child needs to happen in the school,
and, you know, mom and dad can, if it's a mom and dad, can raise the kids and then drop them
off again. And so there really is a huge separation that we're seeing within the building of a family
unit. And when you talk about drawing some lessons from Judaism and living an Orthodox life or even a
real Christian dedicated life, the thing that I think about is the Ve'ahavta, the prayer that
says, v'shinan tam levanecha, right? And you should teach your children, right? We put in our
mezuzah, in our doorpost, the Shema and the Ve'ahavta, so that we're reminded, my kids will
walk by and they'll kiss it every single day, and they're taught in school to kiss it every single
day. And when I see them kiss it, it reminds me that it is my job to teach our kids our values,
but the state and our education system is actually telling us to do the exact opposite.
Right. I think that you've really put your finger on probably the central issue,
which is that in a traditional society, the main thing that children are taught
is first to honor their parents. I mean, like in first grade, when my children go to school,
all of first grade is built around the teachers in the school telling the children, you know,
here's a contest. How did you honor your parents yesterday? How did you honor your parents today?
Honoring your parents, that emotional stance of my main responsibility as a child, my main
responsibility is to make sure that my parents feel my gratitude, that they feel like I'm trying
to help them. That's extremely different from any kind of liberal educational system. A child who
begins by learning, honor your parents, then when they get older, they can honor their teachers,
they can honor the laws, they can honor the Torah, they can honor the rabbis, they can honor their
husband or their wife. They can, I mean, there's a full life of participating. And you know,
of course, you're not forced to keep participating. You can move to a different place or
a different kind of community, but the ability to honor people that you didn't select yourself,
right? Like, let's say you serving in the army, you're going to have commanders and you don't
get to choose them. And the place where you learn this was in first grade, where the teachers,
all of these authority figures, the main thing they want to tell you is it's all coming from
your parents. And just look, that's 180 degrees the opposite of what's happening now in schools
in America and virtually everywhere. Kids are being taught now that if their parents don't
affirm their wish to change their gender, then their parents are wrong. They say, you know,
don't listen to their parents. Not only don't listen to your parents, don't tell your parents
if you're struggling with your gender. Right. And look, this is, let's just make this really
simple because at a certain level, it just is simple. The difference between a Jewish or a
Christian society and the revolutionary Marxist society that we're moving into now, the main
difference is Judaism and Christianity say that the parents are responsible for teaching their
children. You were quoting Moses just now from Deuteronomy, and that's just it. It's right there
in the Torah. It's right there in the Bible. The parents are responsible for teaching the children.
But these folk neo-Marxists who are taking over society, they don't believe in this at all.
They're saying the opposite. They're saying, you don't have a right to raise your children. We know
better. We have experts, people from universities, you know, who've been trained, and they know how
to teach your children. And so you don't get to teach your children. The experts will teach them.
