Ladies and gentlemen, this is Joe's classic video games back with another cool pinball machine video for you this evening
This is the iconic
We'll call it that
Bally's 1982
Mr. And Mrs. Pac-man pinball machine
really interesting game
Very weird would be a good word for it
everything from the look to the way it plays to
The voice in it. It's kind of creepy
You would think Pac-man is supposed to be
Cutesy, but it's kind of creepy. So we'll get to that here shortly. But uh
We just got this one finished up and it came out pretty good. We're happy about it
it's not in a
It's not mint shape or anything like that. But all in all it looks pretty good
So we'll look it over a little bit if you've never seen this one. It's a really interesting machine
Like I said came out in 1982 early 1982
Very colorful game got all kinds of stuff going on in it. I
Believe I may have my
May have my numbers wrong, but I think in 82 the pinball
Industry was kind of going through some stuff. They weren't doing all that great, but
Cool side art now all of this is faded. The pink is faded badly. That would have been a bright pink originally
It's faded almost to white
And they're all pretty much like that you don't find hardly any of these that
Still have the pink going on
Stenciled the first thing you notice is this weird back box. We'll talk about that in a minute. Look at that. Very strange looks cool
Here comes the creepy voice
Oh
That's part of it one of them
So he's knocking it to
the ghosts
Like I said, this was 1982. This is before baby pac-man. So they actually did it in order
They did things the right way. We should be proud of them
They got married and then they had a baby in October of that year baby pac-man was born
But I wonder when jr. Pac-man came out. I probably ought to look that up
Anyway, it has this big maze in the middle of the play field. It's weird and they can spell things like Bali
It's got a bunch of drop targets in the middle
art everywhere
And it's cool back glass. So what's the what's the story with that back box?
If you haven't heard you've heard the story, of course, you know it
But if you haven't heard it back in the day Williams and Bali were in this big
Fight
business
Competition where they were trying to win the pinball market and Williams came out with this interesting game called
Hyperball and so hyperball was just I've never had one
But if we get one, we'll film a video hyperball had a really open play field and you just I think it had flippers
It might have had like a gun finger, but I think it's flippers. But basically you shot balls in a new
Holes that were around the edge of the play field and it had a big
Almost like a
It's hard to explain but like just a perfectly flat play field that they could display things underneath the way lights lit up and things
Like that. Well, anyway, it's a real fast-paced game hyperball and Williams thought it was gonna be like the greatest thing ever
They thought they had invented a new type of game that was gonna sell huge
So they thought that they were gonna make 50,000 of them, which is big in pinball terms
Most pinball machines would sell six seven thousand
Games if it was a fairly decent title, so they thought they were gonna sell 50,000 of these
This was Williams. So Bally found out about it and Bally said, oh hell we got to do that
I mean if we don't do one of those we're gonna get left behind
So they made a basically a copy of it, which was very similar called rapid fire. And so rapid fire
They made a special cabinet for it that looked similar to the hyperball cabinet and it had a weird
cabinet with a
Weird kind of shape that the display went in and then it had this little back box like this that sat up on top of it
Of course, it was a different color with different art and stuff, but that's just stenciled on and they also made a ton of them
So they made like 20,000 of these damn back boxes these weird little short back boxes that aren't tall enough
for this game
Rapid fire and then you know what happened next
Hyperball only sold about 5,000 units and then rapid fire. They only made about 5,000 units
So they were left with all these little tiny back boxes that they didn't have anything to do with
So they thought man, what are we gonna do?
so they were working on this game and they decided that they would all they would alter the
Now if you look the cabinet is the same the body of the cabinet is the same
It's just like a regular one
But they would make this little box here to put the displays in and they would use up some of those back boxes
So they made about
10,000 of these which so it's sold pretty good really
And they still didn't use them all up. They still had a bunch left over. So they went back to the well and
pulled out one of their
Popular titles that they had already remade once or twice eight ball deluxe. We got a back glass up there on the wall
So eight ball deluxe was a full-size game as you can see, that's a full-size back box back glass
Eight ball deluxe had been a really big selling game as was eight ball
And so they made a special edition of this because hell they could always sell more eight ball deluxe as everybody loved that game
So they made a similar cabinet
to rapid-fire and
Put the little back box on it again
They still didn't sell them all they still had some left over. So then they made
They had made a game called centaur which was a big pretty big game and people wanted some more
So they made a special edition of centaur that they called centaur to that used the little back box, too
And they finally used them all up. We think there might be some still floating around somewhere, but
We think they used them all up, but I sold about 10,000 of this one and it has the weird back box because of their
fiasco with rapid-fire that
Them and Williams both were involved in
But it really kind of gives the cabinet a really cool look
Looks neat. I like it a little different
1982 folks, that's what was going on. So we'll check out the playfield. Another thing you see here is this got a display
Under the playfield that you can see all the time between the flippers and it's got the big maze in the middle
You've got a third flipper up there
You got a couple pop bumpers. You got three drop targets up there
For drop targets there for drop targets there and if you look close behind the drop targets, there's a little pac-man
Targets that you can hit after the drop targets fall and then up here at the top is an interesting little saucer
The ball can go in either way
So if the ball comes up this way this plastic piece kind of diverts it around it falls in and then it knows
By the switches and things that the ball came this way and it kicks it back out that way
If the ball comes in that way it knows by the switches that the ball went in that way and it kicks it out this
way
so pretty interesting it works both ways and
there's a really crazy skill shot up here that will show you here in a minute, but uh
The whole game it's it's it's one of those games that's a kind of
It's not symmetric
And it doesn't flow really well
So you don't have like long looping shots like you're doing a lot of the Williams games and some of the Valley games, too
It's it's more
You know, you got to kind of hit the shot that you want to make so, you know plays a little different
This isn't considered like one of the most
One of the most highly rated pinball machines. It's not a dog in my opinion, but it
The the theme is one of the best parts of the game we'll just put it that way really cool theme
So anyway, we'll read over the instructions because as you know
The games are always more fun to play
Whenever you know how to play them
so
Instructions dropping top three targets twice opens the gate
So that's the three up there
The gate is right here and so it saves the ball that the book if the gates closed like that
Fall down and you'll lose it
Pac-man feature
Ball and saucer when qualified starts pac-man play
six moves or more to qualify
When pac-man is played trying to see if these people are coming in or outside
When pac-man is played right flipper button moves the yellow pac-man to see it here moves pac-man right flipper
Left litter left flipper button moves the directional arrows clockwise
Pac-man direction. Alright, so this is kind of hard to figure out whenever you walk up. You kind of have to pay attention to it
It says on the display time to beat maze is completed and pac-man moves. So you earn moves as you play
Through so see how it says here all targets down add five moves
All targets down add five moves once you get up to six moves
it makes it where basically you're qualified to start the maze if you want and so
This light says when flashing qualifies maze. So if you land in that saucer there
Whenever that lights flashing you start the maze, which is kind of like a video mode
And then you've also got one up here same thing
Qualifies maze when flashing so if that light is flashing and you land in the saucer up at the top that we were talking about
The weird one and you can go either way you can go through it
Go to it this way or to this way. You just need to get in the saucer. Did you get in the saucer?
It starts the maze. Well when it starts the maze, you're the yellow one
Which is pac-man and you start out I believe in the middle
And oh, that's a safety zone. I didn't pay any attention to that and
You have this thing above it the pac-man direction
So one of these will be lit if you hit the left button it changes the direction
So see how the left one was lit there and then if you hit the right button you move in that direction
So you've got a certain number of moves pac-man moves depending on how many you have you can move around now if you go to
A square where the adjacent one is the red one. That's the ghost see the ghost chasing pac-man
So if like if you're here and the ghost is here if you move down here
He'll get you and whenever he gets you he goes gotcha
which is creepy, but
We'll play it in the dark here in a minute. We'll turn it up real loud. So it'll scare you to death
So that's the maze. All right
Pac-man aggressive so, you know about the power pellets when lit pac-man eats the red monster light for
50,000 points
When not lit monster eats and subtracts one pac-man. So the one pac-man is the five lights right there
You don't lose your ball. You just lose lose one of these lights here
All right special one replay for pac-man targets when special light is lit
So if you drop awful are eight drop targets there are lights behind it see the pac-man
And whenever you hit the targets behind it
You spell pac-man. So if the special light is lit
In the middle there
It gives you that opportunity
Extra ball one extra ball for ball in either saucer when lit
All right
extra ball light
bonus score
5,000 for each pack maze light
So at the end of the ball it counts down all of the lights that you have lit up
So whatever you're moving around you're basically lighting up the maze instead of eating the dots. You're basically leaving a trail
Like he's doing right there
Additional bonus score
50,000 for each lit pac-man at end of game
Twenty two hundred fifty thousand for each completed pack maze at end of game
Tilt penalty ball in play. All right. So there you go. Now the arts pretty cool
It's kind of like the cartoon was so you've got pac-man miss pac-man
There's a little streetscape in the middle of the play field this weird little
guy, that's the
Fire hydrant or whatever
You've got a ghost over here
You've got pac-man
BAM
Aggressive when lit
Hitting the ghost over there. You've got pac-man up here, too. So you've got everything. So one of the neat things that
I was going to show you is the skill shot is one of the hardest skill shots in pinball
So basically the skill now if you don't know about skill shots whenever you start a game a pinball machine
Usually they have a skill shot where if you make this one shot
Whatever shot that is will have a switch on it
And so if that's the oh if that's the first switch you hit then it knows that you made that shot
If you make this one skill shot you get this big bonus
Pac-man and so on this one it is
Go up through the through the line and
Then you go around here, and you have to do what it says there skill shot you have to go up just enough
That you fall down through here into the saucer if you do it too much you go past it if you don't do it enough
You only go to here and fall back down, so it's a really tough skill shot. I don't know if there's any skill involved
so
But there you go, we'll attempt it here shortly
Check that out
Bali
So I will set up the tripod. We'll turn it up a little bit
And we'll play through it a little and you can tell me what you think in the comment section below be back in just a
second
Alright folks
We will try it out
Like I was saying this isn't a game that has like really great flow or anything. Oh and the sound there's three types of sound
There's kind of like some
This has the squawking talk Bally squawking talk board on it
It's what it was actually called and it does like when you hit targets. It just does little bells and stuff like that
But it has the ability to do digital sound which sounds really cool
So it does the pac-man theme song and some stuff like that that sounds awesome, and then it also
Can do speech and the speech?
They can kind of change the pitch of it so some of its really freaking creepy, so
We'll try it out a little bit. See what you think
Missed it so that's that sound is that's the sound you make when you land in the saucer
So if I go in the saucer now, it's gonna start the maze
Missed it and it's held that over so it's still wanting me to go into the saucer
Pretty good, so I used up all my moves. He didn't catch me
There we go moves it wasn't qualified
There we go now I got three moves, I think you got to have six before it'll let you start the maze
All right, we'll try it again
I didn't get him. I thought I had him
Man, he got away. So when it's pac-man aggressive, you're actually trying to catch the
This is the ghost
Like I would have had at that time, but I
Got a play it where you can hear when the ghost catches you what happens
Hmm it keeps getting caught in that one part
Or didn't make it too much that was horrible
That too much
I'm trying I'm trying
Lucky there we're trying we're trying mr. Creepy pac-man ghost
Man tough game
That's nice rough, man
So if I get 900,000 I get a free game
Too much
Not enough now, come on. Oh, there we go lucky
Look at this
There's a little
Bad move there's a little lip right there on that display it tilted wonder why I
Need to raise that a little bit
Hmm not enough. That's why it keeps hitting the glass too. It's coming down and there's a little lip and it's popcorn enough
Redo
I
Gotta just that display thing a
Lot of times when we shoot these videos this is part of us testing it too, you know
It's not really for sale yet. We just finished it earlier today
Yeah, yeah
Catch them could not catch them people try it again. I want the ghost to catch me so you can hear
Close but no cigar
That in lanes killer
Missed I didn't have enough moves yet too much
This thing's brutal
So this came out in like May five months later. They made baby pac-man, which is even more brutal
So, I don't know what was going on at the time. I
Guess they just wanted to make some hard games
Too much and then right down the middle come on
Look at that. I think the pinball is aggressive. I'm gonna get aggressive
Missed it missed it
From the display there
Nope not quite enough left ramp
Not ramp shot. There we go
Craps creepy gotcha. Gotcha. Yes, I did
Go to pack maze go to pack saucer
Not enough, let's try that again too much
Pac-man people
What a weird game
Just strange. I wonder if everything in 1982 was this strange. I was very young then I don't remember too much about it
But there you go folks that is valleys as it's spelling out there valleys mr. And mrs. Pac-man pinball
Very weird game, but fun. It's kind of cool. Like I was saying earlier the theme
Is out of the world out of this world?
So, you know they tried to make something that kind of had
More than just a pinball to it, you know
so they wanted to make this this maze in the middle to play off the pac-man thing and so a lot of the game is
kind of
designed around that maze
so
hmm
Has its good parts has its bad parts now by the time you see
Pac-man this this video mr. And mrs. Pac-man pinball
