The Bach cantata 'Jesu, der du meine Seele' (Jesus, who is my soul, BWV 078) is one of the most contrasting of Bach's cantatas. Composed for the 14th Sunday after Trinity in 1724, it is an unusually rich synthesis, even by Bach's own standards, of the most diverse compositional traditions and stylistic idioms.

The cantata was first performed on 10 September 1724 for the 14th Sunday after Trinity, making it part of the famous 'choral cantata year' 1724/25. The librettist is unknown. The libretto is based on the hymn of the same name by Johann Rist from 1641, from which the first and last verses of the chorale are taken directly. The five inner movements of the cantata are transcriptions of Rist's texts, with individual lines quoted verbatim, but in some cases elements of several verses are incorporated into individual movements.

Are henceforth his signs of triumph
And can extend to me renewed strengths.
When a fearful judgment
Declares a curse on the damned,
You turn it into blessing.
No grief and no pain can move me,
For my savior knows them;
And because your heart burns with love for me,
I in return lay down
Mine [my heart] before you.
This my heart, mixed with grief,
Sprinkled with your precious blood
That was shed on the cross,
I give you, Lord Jesus Christ.
