The cantata ‘Jesu, der du meine Seele’ (Jesus, who is my soul, BWV 078) is one of the most contrasting creations in Bach's cantata oeuvre. Composed for the 14th Sunday after Trinity in 1724, Bach presented an unusually rich synthesis of the most diverse compositional traditions and stylistic idioms, even by his own standards.
Lyrics:
The blood [of Jesus], which strikes out my debt,
Makes my heart light again
And declares me free.
If hell’s host calls me to battle,
Jesus stands at my side,
So that I might be valiant and victorious.
