‘Jesu, der du meine Seele’ (Jesus, who is my soul) (BWV 78) is a sacred cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach.

The cantata was first performed on 10 September 1724 for the 14th Sunday after Trinity and is therefore part of the famous ‘choral cantata year’ 1724/25. The librettist is unknown. The libretto is based on the hymn of the same name by Johann Rist from 1641, with the first and last verses of the chorale taken directly from it. The five inner movements of the cantata are transcriptions of Rist's texts, whereby individual lines are quoted verbatim, but in some cases elements of several verses are also incorporated into individual movements.

Jesu, who art my soul, BWV 078 // for the 14th Sunday after Trinity Sunday

for soprano, alto, tenor and bass, vocal ensemble, flauto traverso, oboe I+II, corno, bassoon, strings and continuo

The cantata ‘Jesu, der du meine Seele’ BWV 78 is one of the most contrasting creations in Bach's cantata oeuvre. Composed for the 14th Sunday after Trinity in 1724, Bach presented an unusually rich synthesis of the most diverse compositional traditions and stylistic idioms, even by his own standards.
