Clinical depression is a common condition in the modern world and has significant morbidity & mortality. It contributes to suicide, occurrence of other illnesses, adverse outcomes from existing medical conditions, addiction to smoking, alcoholism, and substance abuse, disruption of personal relationships, and reduced work time, which contributes to the economy.
Most often, individuals with depression have changes in their general appearance.
At the initial stages of depression, the appearance may be normal.
However, people with severe depression will have a poor personal hygiene due to lack of self-care.
They may also have weight loss, mainly due to reduced appetite, and long-term stress.
In addition, they may have slow movements, and loss of activity as well.
Due to poor hygiene and lack of care, these individuals often get infections, commonly respiratory tract, and skin infections.
Adverse outcomes from existing disease conditions.
People with depression often tend to avoid their medications.
Therefore, they can have a poor diabetic control, which is partly due to the increased levels of cortisol in blood.
High blood pressure.
Poor wound healing etc.
Another sign of depression is sleep disturbances, which could be either insomnia, or hypersomnia.
They also have a diminished interest or loss of pleasure in almost all activities, which is known as anhedonia.
Other signs and symptoms of depression include, loss of appetite, Irritability., Depressed mood and slow speech, Fatigue, or loss of energy, Diminished ability to think and concentrate, Feelings of worthlessness, And recurrent thoughts of death, and recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan.
