Ukraine peace: Why France warns the US against a quick deal with Russia

The French Minister for Europe has warned the United States against agreeing too quickly to a peace deal with Russia to end that country’s aggression against Ukraine. A bad deal would be neither in the interest of the US nor of Europe, said Benjamin Haddad in conversation with DW-correspondent Teri Schultz. If Russia should rearm and reattack, this would be damaging to US credibility elsewhere in the world, he warned. Haddad stressed that Europeans had to redouble their efforts to support Ukraine to give that country a strong position from which to negotiate. Ukrainians were dying in defense of democracy and security of the whole of Europe, he said, which is why France and other countries were committed to support Ukraine in the long run.
