After numerous delays, in the early hours of January 16, the seven reusable BE-4 engines of New Glenn roared to life, propelling the NG-1 rocket into space. The second stage and payload successfully reached orbit, achieving the primary mission objective for Blue Origin.
This milestone was a fundamental goal that Blue Origin executives had to accomplish, especially given the extensive development and production timeline of New Glenn. Nonetheless, anyway, it marks a resounding triumph for Blue Origin after a decade of effort.
Ariane Cornell, Blue Origin’s Vice President of Orbital Systems, expressed her pride: “Getting to orbit is hard…There are not many countries, or companies … that have ever been to orbit and, y’all, we did it on our first go. Congratulations. That is huge.”

“We did it! Orbital. Great night for Team Blue. On to spring and trying again on the landing.” Dave Limp - CEO of Blue Origin post on X.
The launch also garnered attention from Jeff Bezos’ rival, Elon Musk, who not only wished New Glenn luck before liftoff but also warmly congratulated Blue Origin on their success afterward: “Congratulations on reaching orbit on the first attempt!” Bezos graciously responded with a message of thanks, indicating his satisfaction with the achievement.
This first-flight success was met with widespread acclaim from the space community across social media, as many had eagerly awaited New Glenn’s debut despite a week of repeated delays.
