Hey guys, how you doing? It's Henry at Mowers and Blowers
Today I'm back at my mother's house to repair the good old black beauty black beauty
I've had for over 25 years in my family's life
I bought a brand new from Home Depot, and it's run like a champ still the original flathead 12.5 inch
It's been at my mom's house here for about 15 years
That's when I got a whole bunch of other lawnmowers that were better than this
So I kept it for myself, but I figured I didn't want to sell my original black beauty
So I keep it at my mother's house to do her yard
This thing barely fits into the backyard because the alley that leads from the front to the back is exactly
40 inches and that's a 40 inch deck anyway last time that I was here
The tire fell off the bead and I couldn't get it back on the bead because my mother's house doesn't have an air compressor
So I brought the tire home. I
Replaced it back on the bead again, and now I'm gonna put the tire back on again
But the past few times I've been here the engine doesn't
Run right except on choke which means the carburetor is probably clogged
Which is strange because I have a fuel shutoff, and I always turn it off
when I
Am not using it
But you never know maybe the fuel shutoffs bad and fuel leaked in there and storage and there's some gunk in there anyway
I gotta check it out. So today. I brought my
fixed wheel or tire I
have a
Tire inflator in case I need it someday. I'll just leave it here. That's so many some tools some fuel lines I
May need them to replace to fix the carburetor in case the carburetor is really bad
I've got a Nicky carb over here from a recent machine that I took it off of or an engine with another fuel line and
This is the Walbro type carburetor off of a flathead engine
Which this is and it looks to be in really good condition
This is off of the 8.5 horsepower engine that I got for free locally in my area
I also don't have a jack around here in my mom's house, so I brought this along this
I picked up the street some time a few years ago, and it's really cool
It's not it won't hold you know
Tremendous amounts of weight, but good enough to jack up a lawn tractor just to repair a wheel
You know figure I keep this up my mom's house, too. So let's get going and replace that wheel
This really isn't meant to be a jack you know I mean you can't really even turn this with your hands
Key out of the keyway
And it's well lubricated
Find where the slot is
Push it into the screwdriver
Now the key is in the keyway
the washer over it
the c-clip on top
Get a pair of channel locks on a high setting
compress it down
Rotate it so that little slot goes
Where the keyway is?
It's a beautiful day today
53 degrees, it's December 17th
It's a vitamin D. Let me show you how it runs
Got gas in it fuel shut off is off
Watch choke
I hope it's not the valves because this is a flathead engine and if the valves go it's from
many many years of use and
The expansion of the valves being out of spec
There's really not a whole lot to do with that you can do about it except to grind the valves
slightly but
Usually when that happens, it's not even worth it. You just have to part out the engine and throw it away or something
unfortunately
But let's take the carburetor off and just see what's if it's really dirty or not
So it runs like crap. I recently did just change the air filter
We'll put the fuel shut off on so that no fuel goes into the carb as we take off the
Bowl, I'm just gonna take the bowl nut off
Of course, it's not half-inch
Since when is it a 7 16ths? Well, I guess for these
12 horsepower or less
L heads or flatheads it is
Plenty of fuel
Is pouring out?
All right. So look
It has grass in it
It has this big piece of straw or grass in it
Right there this thing
This thing was probably getting in the way of the emulsion. That's it
It's good
Other than that, it's pretty clean carburetor
exception of the exterior
Just really dirty on the outside that caked on grease and oil
so yeah, even that little bit of
Debris in there get sucked up the emulsion and causes your
Carburetor to not run, right
All it takes is a little speck
If it blocks the emulsion
Limited amount of fuel is getting up to your carburetor
That's probably it I'm gonna clean this out and then we'll try it again while I'm here and blow
carb spray all around the area including the emulsion
Now, let's check for flow
Let's see if there's anything blocking this line. See if it flows out pretty well
It's just dripping really
Not really a high flow wouldn't you agree?
Maybe the fuel filters kind of clogged
That's not that good a flow
let's remove this part of the
Fuel shut off. I
Can tell it this this fuel lines really crispy and stiff
Think I should replace that fuel line. This one's pretty rubbery though. But then if it's really rubbery, it could mean that it's collapsed
decayed
Yeah, I can't even get this off
Can you get it off?
Stick this part off the rubbery part and see if that flow is good
And I just broke the fuel shut off
just snapped
Let's see the flow of this one
Look at this it's all the way down down and there's nothing coming out of it. So there's something blocking
This fuel line here whether it's collapsed
Or even the fuel filter
Is bad, and of course I didn't bring any fill filters
Look at this
Nothing's coming out
So on
So I just checked there's no gas
Right out of gas. So I'm just gonna blow through and see if I can blow freely
It's fine
That's a good fuel line right there. Let's blow through the fuel filter
It's clear. There's nothing wrong with this fuel filter either. I
Do not have another fuel shut off. So I'm gonna have to bring that back next time. I'm gonna replace this hose
We're gonna keep this fuel filter
I'm gonna put a new line on to here under there and I'll bring a fuel shut off next time to fix
You don't just break this
Careful not to break the nozzle from the carburetor. Otherwise, you'd have to replace the carburetor
Put the nozzle to the carburetor, you know what sometimes you can just take this off
That and I'll use the other nozzle from the other carburetor and replace it
So dirty over here, too
Here's the nut from the carburetor bowl
don't see don't see a
Gasket though unless it's on the bowl
It's not it's not even a gasket on here. Can you believe it?
How does it not leak I'll take the other carburetors bowl and they ask gasket and nut and we'll replace it
Here's the carburetor from the 8.5 flathead
It is the same exact carburetor as this one
Here's the fuel nozzle from the carburetor
Let's let me not break this one
Man it won't come off. Should I just replace this whole carburetor on there?
But this has a good nut and a good gasket as you can see
Let's take it off and see it's clean or not
Self-inflicted wounds so far
bad example
Wow
Super clean man. I think because of this we're gonna have to use this carburetor
This is like a new carburetor. I
Think I'm just gonna replace this
And put it on there
It's identical
Damn it. I have limited tools here
As you guys saw from time-lapse I replaced that new carburetor
It looked really new to me
Much better condition than what was on there. I was the original carburetor from 25 years ago. So
Got the new carburetor on there. It was really dirty. So I had to spray it with some degreaser
So it looks cleaner now, I have a new fuel line going from the fuel filter which I tested to the carburetor
I need to add a fuel shut off next time because these tend to get the needle gets tends to get hung up
and then
It flows fuel into the mouth and then into the crankcase and
Then you got fuel mixed into your oil, which is why I always have a fuel shut off
But for now, look we just filled up some gas doesn't seem to be leaking
Fire it up after I check the oil
And see if this thing runs good
The oil was actually down to below the ad line
Surprising this thing kind of drinks a little bit of oil there. I'm just gonna top it off with
about
six ounces five ounces
Of some SAE 30. All right. Let's see if it runs good
Couldn't be worse than four, right
So it doesn't really run as good as before because this carburetor isn't exactly the same as the other one
It has a pilot jet screw here and it also has a fuel mixture screw here, but the fuel mixture
Looks like a pilot jet type nut and not like a needle
So you can't really adjust it. That's like a
Non-adjustable. I mean you're supposed to just turn it in
It runs better with this plug out
So now I'm thinking maybe I should put the old carburetor back on and just put the new bowl
I have to study it a little bit
So I actually took the pilot jet
kind of screw out and
I put the original
Fuel mixture screw tight in there. It doesn't really fit, right?
So I don't think it's meant for it because this carburetor was meant for an 8.5
Horsepower engine and so it didn't take the pin, you know what I mean?
So I even tried this now and it doesn't really run right so I'm almost thinking that I need to try to get
this plastic nozzle off the fuel input and try to put it on here and
Then put this original
Carburetor back on there again. I know I risk breaking this one, too
You know, the other one was just so old and brittle that just touching it. I
But I'm gonna try to take this off and put it on here and use this carburetor
Because this carburetor is meant for this engine 12.5. And I think because this is for an 8.5 the Jets aren't drilled
For a 12.5, which is why it's kind of starving for gas, you know
It's running too lean
You want it to run more rich with this one?
I think that's what I'm gonna try to do if I don't do it and I break this one, too. I'll have to try
another carburetor
Okay, I just put on a Nicky carb
took the fuel solenoid off of the bottom and put the regular nut on there because I don't want the
Fuel solenoid. Let's see if it runs better now
That's three carbs. I just changed. Oh
All the way down
Well, there are fake Nicky's and there are real Nicky's this one's actually a real Nicky because it actually says
Nicky on it
I didn't have to go through all this trouble if I was just a little bit more careful in removing stuff because remember
We wouldn't be in this concoction and this mess
I didn't just break the input nozzle by trying to tear it off because I was impatient
If I took care in removing that old fuel line
I probably just had to clean that carburetor and it would have been fine, but I do feel much better now because
It sounds better than the original. So I broke the fuel nozzle off of this one or this one and
This one over here was for the 8.5, which means that the Jets were drilled to
Lean it had to be drilled bigger to accommodate a 12.5 horsepower engine
See this while being a 12.5 horsepower engine. I was an idiot and I broke the fuel nozzle off of this
I mean I could still probably use this in the future, you know the parts from it and stuff
It was just dirty and it needed a new gasket and this one had a good one
As you can see I took the nut off of this one the 8.5 had a brand new gasket in it
The carburetor is practically new
And I put it on the Nikki where this fuel solenoid used to be
You guys know I get rid of these fuel solenoids anyway, because they're nothing but trouble
I know it's the same thread just put the nut back in there. Now. I have no fuel solenoid for that as original
So we got a new
Fuel line on there. I do need to put on a fuel
Shut off the next time I come here to store this for the winter. You don't want fuel
Continually going to the carburetor and if you're like tilted wrong or something, it'll not seat
You know flood the engine. Anyway, this block beauty deserved a little bit of maintenance and a carburetor tune-up today
We just replaced the carburetor with a Nikki
And some new fuel lines now runs fantastic
Love it
