This past October, the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute, in partnership with the
Centre for Agri-Food Benchmarking, brought together more than 200 leaders in Ottawa.
Canadian agri-food in a sustainable world sparked dynamic debate and exchange around the tensions,
challenges, and opportunities related to sustainability in agriculture.
Throughout the two days, industry leaders, government officials, NGOs, and academics
tackled complex questions like what defines sustainability and how should we measure it.
They explored the role of the National Index for Agri-Food Performance in advancing meaningful
environmental, social, and economic standards. Five key takeaways emerged from the conference.
1. Defining sustainability remains complex but must be pursued for long-term viability.
2. Measuring sustainability with credible data, a framework, and consistent standards is essential.
3. One size does not fit all. Diverse voices must be heard.
4. Government's role is to ensure policies are effective so outcomes can be achieved.
But the industry must do its part as well.
And 5. Canada needs a clearer, long-term vision and strategy for sustainability.
