For the past several decades, there has been less agricultural land available and more
mouses to feed, creating a greater need to prioritize how land is used.
It is not just about producing more food, but also about ensuring that these lands are
viable for generations to come.
That is why CAPI is working on a Policies for Land Use, Agriculture and Nature initiative.
As part of this initiative, four doctoral candidates from across Canada will be investigating
land use challenges and the policy implications of these issues.
We are going to explore the impacts of digital agricultural technologies on farmers' ability
to address climate change and biodiversity loss, the use of a spatial system framework
to balance agricultural productivity and conservation in the Canadian prairies, the economic impact
of the adoption of soil conservation practices on agricultural productivity, and the role
of federal and provincial farm insurance programs in mitigating the effects of climate change.
Stay tuned for the outcomes of this research and to hear what this could mean for land
use policy.
