DIY Potting Soil - CHEAP, Just Like Expensive Commercial Potting Soil only WAY Cheaper #CaptainWingnut
In this episode Brad will show you how to make commercial grade potting soil very inexpensively.
At Cougar Ridge Ranch we start all of our flowers and garden plants in our greenhouse.
To do that it takes a lot of potting soil.
We will use about 4-6 cubic feet of potting soil each spring in the green houses and another 8-12 cubic feet throughout the summer as we pot and re-pot growing trees plants.

To do this you will need
1. Sphagnum Peat Moss
2. Composted animal manure
3. Perlite
4. Optional, any extended release fertilizer pellets, magnesium sulfate (epsom salt), egg shell calcium (see my video), sand.
Peat Moss.
We buy it in the 3.8 cubic foot bags from our local farm supply for about $14 but you can buy it in what ever quantity you need.
Animal Manure
We have chickens so we compost the manure through the summer and winter with horse manure and once its at least a year old we can use it without fear of it burning or killing.
In the video Brad uses a 1 cubic foot bag of Composted Steer Manure he bought from a big box hardware store.
You can use any compost or composted manure.
The bag of steer compost was $2.15
Perlite
This is a mineral that is light and airy. It absorbs water and holds it until the plant needs it so it helps keep your potting soil wetter longer.
A 4 cubic foot bag of perlite is anywhere from $5 to $10
You'll find that making your own potting soil costs way less than buying it already made and you know exactly what's in it.
MIX RATIO
Brad uses 1 part compost with 2 parts peat moss and 1/2 to 1 part pearlite.
Some people mix sand into their potting soil as well. It keeps it loose and light and keeps it from packing down too hard.
