Built My Own Sawmill! 🎉 Watch the Magic Happen! #CaptainWingnut
This Monster saved me THOUSANDS over the Lumber Store Wood. 50 days to build, 30 minutes to watch
Totally from memory without written plans.
🪵 This sawmill is 4 feet wide, 6 feet tall and 24 feet long
It can handle up to a 30" diameter log and can make up to 20 foot long boards.
It's highest cut off the deck is 26.75"
Its lowest cut off the deck is 1"
I built into the head a tilt feature which allows the sawmill to cut lap siding sometimes called clap board (overlapping siding). This utilizes my wood better with much less waist. This is where one edge of a plank is thinner than the opposite edge allowing the planks to be uniformly overlapped for better fit and water run off. This is a strength and waterproofing feature used for siding and in wooden ship building.
It took me 50 build days over a 6 month period, and over 50 hours of video condensed into 25 minutes
I started building it June 1st and finished it December 6th
It snowed the day after I finished placing it in its working spot and the snow didn't stop until May of the next year.
I worked on it as often as I could throughout the summer in between events, speeches, making other videos, traveling, family matters, ranch work, gardening, fishing and hunting and any other shiny object that distracted me.
The engine is a 420cc (13hp) Predator, electric start with a series 40 centrifugal racing clutch
I put an extra Magneto-Coil and rectifier to double its charge amps capacity to recharge the electric start 12v battery.
The extra coil doubles the output voltage to 3vdc and the add on rectifier/regulator moderates and combines the power from two magnitos.
It's basically a trickle charger but it keeps the battery up to the top very nicely.
It has 2, 6 inch 18W Flood LED Work Lights for night work.
It has an inductive hour meter built for lawn mowers
It has a waterproof battery isolation and master disconnect switch
Dual rulers built into the head for accurate measured cuts
It is mounted on 8, 2,000lb tilting trailer tongue jacks as legs
It weighs in at just over 1,200 lbs
The blade wheels are BK160H and the blade wheel belts are 50" "B" belts = B-47 and they were hell to get on.
The drive wheel is a BK140 = 87" "B" BELT = B-84
The 1" stainless steel blade guides are made by Cooks Saw
The blades are 1" wide and 164" long DuraSharp 7/8" offset tooth spacing
Except for a few saw specific parts like the blades and the blade guides and the motor, I bought everything else on Amazon.
Here's my Amazon Store Front where I list everything I buy.
