When storing and managing your
vaccine supply it is essential to have the
proper equipment and procedures
to ensure your patients receive
safe AND effective vaccines. In this short
video you will learn about
vaccine storage units such as
refrigerators and freezers and a
temperature monitoring device called a
data logger or ddl
the cdc recommends the
use of specialized or
pharmaceutical grade units to refrigerate or
freeze vaccines home use units
those with a refrigerator and
freezer may be an
acceptable alternative but not These types of unit should use the
freezer compartment.
Vaccines should never be
stored in any unit with a combined refrigerator and
freezer such as those
used in student dormitories or
bars as they present a
significant risk of the
vaccines freezing even when are used for
temporary storage not all
small storage units are
like those in
dorms or bars
compact, specialized
biological units can be used to
safely store vaccines
each vaccine storage unit
must have a
monitoring device reliable temperature sensor to
monitor temperatures Unit
The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention recommends
a specific type of
temperature monitoring device called a
digital data recorder or
DDL. If you receive vaccines purchased with
federal funds such as through the
Vaccines for Children program, you are
required to use a
DDL digital data loggers
continuously monitor and record
storage unit temperatures at
preset intervals. This
detailed temperature information can be
downloaded and reviewed. Reviewing
DDL data is critical to the
viability of vaccines and to
preventing
administration errors. many
Digital data loggers or DDLs use a
buffered temperature probe. A
buffered probe matches the
actual temperature of the vaccine
compared to standard thermometers
that tend to reflect
air temperature to accurately monitor
vaccine temperatures in an
Ultra unit. cold it is essential to use
an air probe or a probe designed
specifically for ultra
cold temperatures when selecting a ddl
recommended features include
a removable probe that better reflects
vaccine temperatures such as a
glycol buffered zone
glass beads sand or Teflon a display with
the current minimum and maximum temperature
a recommended uncertainty of plus
or minus 0.5 grc or plus or minus 1 gr
Fahrenheit and a recording interval or
reading speed that can be
programmed to measure and record
temperatures at least every 30 minutes
can also be useful if the ddl
has an alert system for
temperatures out of range and for
low battery. These features, together
with a temperature recording sheet
for daily monitoring and documentation,
make the ddl the best
option for the Vaccine temperature monitor
must have a
separate ddl device for each
storage unit AND at least one
backup device in case one does not
work properly Each
ddl device must have a
current calibration test certificate And this is
also valid Known as a
calibration report, this test ensures the
accuracy of your device relative
to internationally accepted standards.
Calibration tests should be performed every two or
three years or as per
the
manufacturer's suggested schedule. Follow the
DDL manufacturer's guidance for
instructions. specifics on how to
