No. 17 'Scene on the Place de Notre-Dame' is one of Chopin's softest and most melodic pieces. This delicate and beautiful gem is said to have been a favourite of many composers; Mendelssohn wrote of it, "I love it! I cannot tell you how much or why; except perhaps that it is something I could never have written at all. There is a sense of floating, release, almost bliss in the piece as a whole. But even this bliss is open to interpretation. The piece feels slightly hesitant; you want to savour the moment of happiness and not let it go. In contrast, Arrau's hands make the piece sound a little tense and nervous, despite the serenity that is present.
